Wal-Mart suddenly closed 5 stores and laid off thousands of workers and no one knows why

The closures could last up to six months and affect roughly 2,200 workers in Texas, California, Oklahoma, and Florida, CNN Money reports.

Wal-Mart employees say they were completely blindsided by the news, having been notified only a couple hours before the stores closed at 7 p.m. Monday.

"Everybody just panicked and started crying," Venanzi Luna, a manager at a store in Pico Rivera, California, told CNN Money.

All workers will receive paid leave for two months. After that, full-time workers could become eligible for severance, according to CNN Money. But part-time workers will be on their own.

Local officials and employees have questioned Wal-Mart's reasoning for the closures.

According to ABC News, "no plumbing permits have been pulled in any of the five cities where the stores were suddenly closed for at least six months."

A city official in Pico Rivera confirmed to CBS Los Angeles that the city has not received any permit requests for building repairs.

In Midland, Texas, where another store was closed, a city official told ABC News that his plumbing inspector was turned away when he visited the store and offered to help secure construction permits.

Wal-Mart plumbing technician Codi Bauer, who worked at the now shuttered store in Brandon, Florida, questioned the company's time frame for the repairs.

I would think that is the whole issue in a nutshell, without discussing it publicly.

Close them, count everything, do a complete audit of the paperwork, ditch most of the staff and then re-open them in 6 months time.

“Yep. So, one wonders if they have plans for new stores in more business-friendly locales close to these stores. And then there’s the re-staffing implicit I with that. Need popcorn.”

Non business friendly cities/counties and states are finding out that the big buck sales stores are closing stores and refusing to play the games the unfriendly tax suckers play.

Or the companies refuse to move into hostile anti business cities. A left wing city north of Eureka Ca kept the big stores out until a few years ago. Then, they changed. The internet helped to change their drugged up left wing mings.

The theory is they (the gov) will do an attack on April 19th and blame the patriot movement, april 19th as it is a anneversary of Oklaholma City Bombing...

Do those states have laws about advance notice to close because of labor, but not due to facilities maintenance or failure?

Maybe you could add: Avoid being treated like a second class citizen——in a store with no customer service and a scrawny rack of un-useable merchandise. I’ve been doing the order-from-shop thing for a couple decades now. And it’s likely that someone is still alive because they didn’t get the opportunity to shine me on in a store.

Ya got the wrong target.

There are now more unionized government employes in America than what exist in private sector America.

And guess what?

You’re paying for all their incomes and all those opulent gold plated benefits/pensions.

[ Walmart stores have very limited access. Start counting all the exterior doors on a typical mall and then look at a Walmart. Plus. A Walmart store is a huge open building with high ceilings where the mall is a maze of hallways, corners, and interior walls. You could control thousands in a Walmart with a relatively small number of guards with very few modifications to the store. ]

Also there is a lot of storage area in the back of the store for logistics that we don’t normally see.

All of the support pillars make excellent attachment points for chainlink type fence to quickly parition the floor into zones.

The small “inside walmart” store at the front make for great “admin offices” for those running the detention center as well.

Some of the other stores at the fron of the store can be used for detention areas for rabble rousers.

With some minor modifications really any large store could be made into a minimal security “prison camp”...

Wal-Mart overbuilds their A/C so the whole store can run on just one of several installed units. They are not going to be used as detention facilities. They are going to be used as MORGUES!!!! 6 months from April 8 is Nov 8, election night -Marshall Law!

/Sarcasm

I worked ‘Loss Prevention’ at a WallyWorld. It was bad (South Dallas). Our hands were tied. I did LP at a Sears in the early 90’s and we could tackle and detain.

Nonsense. The bathroom facilities at Walmart superstores are only enough for a few people at a time, not the hundreds that would be housed in them.

That’s what the plumbing repairs are for....[sarc]

Maybe they’ll be more grateful for the job they used to have. No pay vs ‘low’ pay might put that into perspective for them.

I’m going with my “rampant employee theft” theory.

The one in Brandon was in a nice, middle class town, so I would be surprised if it was theft. Of course, it only takes "one bad apple", so maybe it is???
