Ted Cruz knocks Scott Walker on immigration
Washington Examiner ^ | 4/24/2015 | Drucker

Posted on 04/24/2015 4:12:26 PM PDT by VinL

Sen. Ted Cruz on Friday took a shot at rival presidential contender Scott Walker for comments the Wisconsin governor has made regarding immigration policy.

Cruz opposes comprehensive immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship for the estimated 11-12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States. But the Texan is a big proponent of legal immigration and making adjustments to U.S. law that would facilitate more legal immigration. He criticized Walker for suggesting that he supported limiting legal immigration if it has a negative impact on the wages of American workers.

"There is considerable bipartisan agreement outside of Washington that we need to improve and streamline legal immigration so that we can remain a nation that welcomes and celebrates legal immigrants," Cruz said in an interview with the Washington Examiner during a brief campaign swing through Las Vegas.after cost estimates came in higher than anticipated.

I think it is a mistake for any politician to on the one hand embrace amnesty, embrace a pathway to citizenship for those who are here illegally, and on the other hand seek to restrict or punish legal immigrants," Cruz continued. "I am the son of an immigrant who came legally from Cuba. [President Ronald] Reagan referred to legal immigrants as Americans by choice and there is no stronger advocate of legal immigration in the U.S. Senate than I am."

"I think the right approach is to secure the border, follow the rule of law and embrace and improve legal immigration," Cruz said.

Walker has conceded a change of heart on immigration policy as he gears up to launch a 2016 presidential bid. The governor, 47, previously supported a pathway to legal status for illegal immigrants. Now he is opposed. Supporting a pathway to legalization or citizenship could be problematic for a Republican candidate seeking his party's White House nomination.

But in a recent interview with conservative talk show host Glenn Beck, Walker appeared to move farther to the right on immigration than even amnesty hawks like Cruz. Here's what Walker said, as reported by Breitbart. (read more)

I don’t have a problem with immigration as long as it is done legally.

I have a problem with it.

The third world immigrants who turned Reagan's California into a Democrat one-party state were mostly legal.

The Muslims pouring into our homeland almost all come via legal visa and refugee programs.

"Illegal = Bad. Legal = Good" is baby talk from those ignorant of the facts, or willfully trying to obscure the facts.

The legality of immigration is far less important than the source of the immigrants and the numbers in which they arrive.

A hundred thousand Muslim legal immigrants, all with shiny real green cards is a big negative for our homeland. A similar number of Irish or Polish folks overstaying their tourist admissions and staying on as illegal aliens bothers me little.

Walker is barely touching on the truth, (mentioning economics but not culture/security) but that still puts him way ahead of the GOP crowd on the issue.

America wasn’t founded by immigrants, as it needed more people it started allowing people like themselves to come in, that is ancient history, we filled up long ago and this last 130 million people made up of democrat imports and their offspring, has killed us.

Well put.

“There you go again creating a phony strawman. I am not recommending stopping all legal immigration. The question is how many should be allowed in each year and with what skills. It is a public policy issue. You lack the information to comment rationally, so all you are stuck with are platitudes and generalizations.”

No, others in this thread has said that is what is needed, and I am not for that.

I am not an expert on legal immigration, I am just some dude, and I have stated why I am for legal immigration.

But I see you throwing all sorts of charts and graphs around, so I see that it’s really important to you.

So why don’t you go get a job with the government, the ones who determine the thing that is so important to you, and go make the changes you see fit from the place and thing that has the authority to make such changes, because you are definitely wasting your time and energy here.

And no, I do not lack the information to comment rationally. I have formed my position based upon my life experiences, and because my life experiences don’t line up with or agree with your charts and graphs, you resort to insulting me.

To which I put a giant middle finger in your face.

Thanks, I was not aware that he was starting a u turn on the illegals already here. I hope he holds firm and keeps taking advice from Jeff Sessions.

These new tougher positions on immigration could move a lot of the base his way. Should he get the nomination, I think it is the most effective way to peel away Democrat votes. Seems like a no brainer, but all the candidates want the crony money. I’m glad at least one candidate had the guts to go against them.

Cruz was only for h1b and that didn't see daylight. So who will you support then?

If this issue of H1B is so important to you then you actually have
nobody to vote for. And let me be perfectly clear to you hacks, Cruz
is not for illegal Amnesty yet you Hacks always bring it up when talking
about Cruz.

So maybe you damn Hacks had better get your names rights with the politics,
because Cruz isn't for Amnesty. Idiot.

Cruz wants to expand immigration.

And that's another "damn lie" from you RINO-bot hacks.

H1B isn't immigration, it's temporary work visas by skilled workers who pay taxes.
