Ted Cruz knocks Scott Walker on immigration
Washington Examiner ^ | 4/24/2015 | Drucker

Posted on 04/24/2015 4:12:26 PM PDT by VinL

Sen. Ted Cruz on Friday took a shot at rival presidential contender Scott Walker for comments the Wisconsin governor has made regarding immigration policy.

Cruz opposes comprehensive immigration reform that includes a path to citizenship for the estimated 11-12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States. But the Texan is a big proponent of legal immigration and making adjustments to U.S. law that would facilitate more legal immigration. He criticized Walker for suggesting that he supported limiting legal immigration if it has a negative impact on the wages of American workers.

"There is considerable bipartisan agreement outside of Washington that we need to improve and streamline legal immigration so that we can remain a nation that welcomes and celebrates legal immigrants," Cruz said in an interview with the Washington Examiner during a brief campaign swing through Las Vegas.after cost estimates came in higher than anticipated.

I think it is a mistake for any politician to on the one hand embrace amnesty, embrace a pathway to citizenship for those who are here illegally, and on the other hand seek to restrict or punish legal immigrants," Cruz continued. "I am the son of an immigrant who came legally from Cuba. [President Ronald] Reagan referred to legal immigrants as Americans by choice and there is no stronger advocate of legal immigration in the U.S. Senate than I am."

"I think the right approach is to secure the border, follow the rule of law and embrace and improve legal immigration," Cruz said.

Walker has conceded a change of heart on immigration policy as he gears up to launch a 2016 presidential bid. The governor, 47, previously supported a pathway to legal status for illegal immigrants. Now he is opposed. Supporting a pathway to legalization or citizenship could be problematic for a Republican candidate seeking his party's White House nomination.

But in a recent interview with conservative talk show host Glenn Beck, Walker appeared to move farther to the right on immigration than even amnesty hawks like Cruz. Here's what Walker said, as reported by Breitbart. (read more)

You guys need to pick a substantive topic. This is going nowhere.

Problem for you is, made up topics are by definition without substance.

My great grand parents immigrated from Germany around 1900 and they were productive citizens so what is your point against legal immigration ?

“A moratorium of at least thirty years to assimilate the ones already here makes sense.”

The real problem is that we’re dealing with traitors, both politicians and executives of businesses. The other problem is that these traitors do what they want because there are no consequences. Now, if we set up an American-style Nuremberg to punish these traitors - both politicians and business executives - you can bet your bottom dollar that changes will happen real fast.

It’s time to start talking about treason and subsequent penalties.

This is a great thread, and I hope it's one of those epic FR threads that goes beyond 1,000 comments.

We NEED to have this discussion. Both Cruz and Walker are good men, solid conservatives. But immigration - legal or illegal - is an absolute deal-breaker to the base.

Seriously you want to just keep feeding the destruction of America?

Are you old enough to remember what it was like here before these 10s and 10s of millions of foreigners, came in to empower the American left and destroy our culture, language and national identity and turn us into a welfare nation slipping into chaos and incompetence?

Ted Kennedy’s 1965 Immigration Act must be repealed, and legal immigration must be capped at no more than 1,000,000 a year.

It must be stopped. And, moreover, it's not just the quantity (one million as you cited) but the quality of the immigrant that must be taken in account. A highly-selective form of immigration, with inspection at the source, is required to restore American Exceptionalism.

If a person goes through all the steps required by our laws and actually has something to offer this country by their presence here, why shouldn’t they be allowed to come?

That's not the issue. How many of them should we allow to come every year? Should the number of legal immigrants have some connection with our jobs and skill needs?

Walker is talking about limiting the numbers of legal immigrants given the fact that we have the lowest labor participation rates in 38 years. Who defends the interests of American workers? If we had a shortage of labor, wages would be increasing, not declining.

Do you think there should be any limits to the numbers of legal immigrants?

Cruz is a rock-ribbon constitutional conservative- who has proven time and time again- that he would govern that way- There’s no one better.

When it comes to immigration, I have no doubt that it will do the right thing as to the interests and security of the nation.

Some of the Board want a fantasy- it will never happen. At least, with Cruz you get someone who lives by the Constitution.

Hispanic relative to European immigration into America has something 50:1.

Do you believe that Hispanic immigrants overall are 50:1 likely to be more skilled than European immigrants in general.

I haven’t heard Cruz say he is going to undermine unskilled immigration which won’t exactly align to general ethnic pandering on immigration.

I going to be very blunt.

When you start off with an utterly retarded notion that immigrations has “destroyed” the country, somehow being under the stupid impression that the only “real” Americans are the ones that were here in 1776 and not one minute after, I completely stopped taking you seriously.

Are you so dumb that you have NO CLUE the sheer number of people on this site whose family origins in this nation, did not start back in the 18th century?

Are you going to sit here like some self-righteous fool and tell us that our families have “destroyed” this nation. The sheer number of people that have built virtually all of the fortunes of that you crown yourself on top of like YOU did it all on your own.

Like I said, read a damn book and stop acting like the “democrat’s 1965 Immigration Act?” accounts for 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000% of everyone that has immigrated to this nation since then and that ALL OF THEM became flaming communists.

You got a bug up your ass because you think that all legal immigrants are trying to steal your job and vote for leftists? Because from what I see it is the kids of a lot of so-called conservatives that have turned into flaming libs that have done just as much damage.

How frigging stupid can some of you get? Stop the illegals first, THEN sort out those “evil bastards” that do it the legal way.

He says he wants to limit legal immigration if it costs U. S. workers jobs.

Then he says he’ll find a way to keep illegals in the nation if they pay a fine. We know damn well they cost American workers jobs.

Mexican lettuce-pickers aren't taking American jobs.

Indian tech workers here on H-1B visas are. These are the legal immigrants Walker wants to restrict, and the ones Cruz wants to increase.

“Legal immigration is what destroyed America....”

It was all downhill after we let the Irish and the Italians in.

How much of a net benefit should the immigrant bring?

If an immigrant is arguably only 5 or 10% more efficient in terms of work and being law abiding in the community that’s not much of a net benefit.

I would argue many of the lawful immigrants are on par with American workers and are being let in when their economic contribution isn’t a net positive.

There’s no way the people who work at USCIS have the time or bother to go through millions of applications to work out which ones will be bring a net positive.

I get it. What I am saying is that they might as well since there is no opposition to them cutting America’s throat. Take advantage of the forum as always to promote their liberalism for free as they always do.

Because no one seems to care that thats whats happening. And no one stops them. They would be stupid not to get for free what most have to pay big bucks to accomplish.

Not to worry- Sen. Cruz has the better position. It’s Walker who will disappoint.
