How the Baltimore Mayor's office explains her infamous 'space to destroy' remark
Washington Examiner ^ | April 27, 2015 | Philip Klein

With massive violence spreading in Baltimore on Monday, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is under fire for a statement she made over the weekend indicating that she ordered the city's police to give people the "space" to destroy property.

"I've made it very clear that I work with the police and instructed them to do everything that they could to make sure that the protesters were able to exercise their right to free speech," Rawlings-Blake said in a press conference.

"It's a very delicate balancing act, because, while we tried to make sure that they were protected from the cars and the other things that were going on, we also gave those who wished to destroy space to do that as well. And we worked very hard to keep that balance and to put ourselves in the best position to deescalate, and that's what you saw."

How could a mayor actually say she asked police to allow people to destroy property?

According to her office, her statement didn't quite come out the way she intended it to.

How is the media going to pin the blame on the white Republican governor?

They'll do it.

Have you forgotten Katrina?

Well, they came up with the term “white hispanic” for George Zimmerman .... they’ll think of something.

She looks like she rather be at the “clubz”.

And imagine that this is where our national anthem was penned.

While watching the coverage, one question kept coming into my mind: Who told the police to stand down? Any bets on who it was? I’m assuming that someone will eventually ask the question.

I agree with you on both points.
I give her the benefit of the doubt on intent.
I also think it was “communication incompetence” to state it as she did.

She needs to get with the program. Obviously, her statement was too "nuanced" for most of us to understand what she meant.

I suppose but I love to see liberals make a total fool of themselves. I am enjoying hearing it being played over and over.

I have to say that, honestly, I can actually believe that her statement was misinterpreted. It was poorly worded, and I think that is why everyone thinks she was saying that the rioters SHOULD be given space to destroy.

But, I don't think that's what she really meant. I think she really did mean that, in an effort to allow peaceful protests, they inadvertently gave space to those who wanted to destroy [property]. She went on to say that they wanted to be in a position to de-escalate, when/if possible, and I think the point she was making is that if they had simply set the police on the protesters with tear gas, rubber bullets, tasers, etc., it could have caused an escalation, where more and more people (in particular, non-violent participants) would react violently to being "attacked".

I am in no way defending the rioting and violence, nor do I necessarily agree with the relatively passive approach the police took, but I do think this woman's statement is being misunderstood.

Flame away if you must...

They have already began to imply that this is based in decades long racism and continue impoverishment.

Baltimore has a black Mayor, a black Chief of Police, and is 60+% black!

So, tell me again how decades long racism and continued impoverishment is the fault of the old, angry white man?!?!

If she misspoke, she should have corrected her statement immediately and not allowed the “misinterpretation” of permission to destroy (including giving them one more night before instituting a curfew) to continue for days.

Hmmm?

Does someone have a TRICORDER they can run this thru?

How is the media going to pin the blame on the white Republican governor?

If ONE black person is injured or, God forbid, shot by the National Guard, the media will become a rabid, wild attack dog on the "brutality" of the white, Republican Governor! They will CLAIM that the Guard's presence caused the situation to escalate (how it can get worse, I'm not sure)!

WATCH!!!

It didn’t come out the way she wanted it to because she forgot that she wasn’t just talking to other black homey’s. That’s why.

That’s the usual after-the-foot-inserts-in-the-mouth liberal excuse. What we heard was the heart spittling her liberal mindset. The truth about her mindset was too much truth for the rabble, so she is trying to get her fallen-arches-foot out of her mouth now so her imbalanced mind will not be so openly displayed.

The actions of the local police suggest this is exactly what she intended. The MSM was calling it a “controlled burn” and the cops initially setup a perimeter to contain the rioters. I think once the looting and burning started she realized what a bad idea it was.
