Houston police said if it wasn't for several brave customers, a police officer wouldn't have survived a brutal attack inside a Walmart.
According to investigators, the Houston Community College police officer was working a second job as a security guard at a Walmart off South Post Oak Road in the Meyerland area.
Around 2 a.m. Tuesday, a man wielding a large hunting knife walked up to the female guard and, without warning, attacked.
"She was sitting there watching the registers, providing security, when he just walked in and attacked her," said Kese Smith, a public information officer with the Houston Police Department.
The man tried to grab her gun and then stabbed her several times in her torso and arm.
Officers said a group of customers wrestled the man and used the officer's handcuffs to detain the man until Houston police arrived.
The customers also gave the officer medical attention until paramedics rushed her to Ben Taub Hospital.
"Those are the heroes here," said Smith. "They had a choice. They could have run, but they chose to intervene."

A reminder to carry a weapon at all times and be aware of those around you.
This is going to get worse.
“The man tried to grab her gun and then stabbed her several times in her torso and arm. “
She was armed and still allowed the asshat to stab her?? So she thought having a nice pretty gun was decoration to match her pants.
not sure about the popo
Just wait ‘til the Bishop gets ahold of those guys.
They took out a wonderful golf driving range several years ago so they could build this Walmart. We went once when it was fairly new during mid-morning. Dirty and creepy was my initial impression. Even though our entire family does concealed carry when in Houston now, this is one area I definitely would not ever venture to again - EVER. Really too bad because Meyerland which is just north used to be a really great, safe area.
Hope Bellaire is taking notice of what type of environment is moving north toward them.
I'm just sayin'.
Is this the Walmart at 610 and S. Post Oak?
I never feel too comfortable in that area. Some weird stuff has happened in that part of town over the years. I’ve only shopped at that particular Walmart once.
The Walmart you reference is right next to a Luby’s, and is only about 2.5 miles from my house.
I refuse to go there and have forbidden my wife to go there also.
It simply is not safe.
It is a hate crime waiting to happen.
Last time she was there a black woman was hitting white people with her cart in an effort to create a conflict so she could assault them (further).
Yes it is. T Bone and I exchanged a message about it. This is the second incident at that Walmart recently. The other one I believe involved two women who were arrested for shoplifting and just left their small children inside the store while they ran.
He does have a diagnostic history of mental illness in the past. To what degree that played into what happened, we dont know, local community activist Deric Muhammad said, speaking on behalf of the Matthews family. He said it is possible that Matthews was inspired by the riots in Baltimore Monday night.
I heard Muhammad speaking on TV but thought he was Matthews’ attorney. Don’t tell me he’s joining Quanelle in the world of Houston activists. Don’t believe we need any more like him. Matthews being inspired by the riots in Baltimore is just ridiculous. They’re going to milk it for all its worth aren’t they?
Yes. He’s another community activist like Mr. X.
