TEHRAN (FNA)- An informed source in Iran confirmed earlier reports that the Iranian Navy has seized a US ship in the Persian Gulf, adding that the ship is Marshall Islands-flagged, but is owned by the US.
"The ship is a trade vessel and has been seized by the Iranian navy at the request of Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization," the source told FNA on Tuesday.
"The ship was seized after a relevant court order was issued for its confiscation," he added, indicating that the the IPMO had monetary differences with the ship owner.
The source said the ship is a "Marshall Islands-flagged, but is owned by the US", adding that the crew are from different nationalities, including Europeans.
The source said there could also be American nationals among the crew.
The Iranian Navy confiscated the American trade vessel with all its 34 crew on Tuesday afternoon.
Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy is responsible for security of Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf.
Iran's military vessels are now taking the American vessel to Iran's Southern port city of Bandar Abbas in the Persian Gulf. . .

It is very fluid right now and the information is contradictory.
Of course, if they do take one of our ships, we are not to hold that against them regarding the nuclear talks. One has absolutely nothing to do with the other. /sarc.
No we don’t, as soon as the Nukes are unloaded and securely in IRAN, they will release the ship, shake hands and rejoice in IRAN’s entry in to the NUCLEAR WORLD.
When will Obama apologize for our oppressive stance towards Iran which led to this understandable action by the aggrieved Iran?
To answer your question, the Iranians would not date do this under those presidents. With limerick Democrats like Carter and Omuslim, the Mullahs have free rein.
Sorry for the typos. That’s “ dare” and “limpwristed”
Fear not.. a forceful response is already in the works!
Took care of that back in 2008.
Maybe it's time to tour again.
Im pretty sure there are over 1200 ships registered in the Marshall islands because it’s “convenience”. They also flag ships from countries that are not friendly to the U.S.
Would you consider those ships our responsibility as well?
Technically it was not a US Ship according to this report. In fact, I’m pretty sure there aren’t any US ships in international trade lanes any more.
American ships are pretty much active in coastal and very local trade lanes......
Then there is Maersk. I believe Maersk vessels are all foreign flagged as well.
What if a Chinese, Pakistani, or Indonesian vessel registered in the Marshall islands gets into a situation like this are we responsible for them?
There’s about 34 US flagged maersk ships
but, aren’t they the last of the American flagged vessels?
There are plenty US flagged vessels, cargo, containers, & tankers.
Crowley, madsen, maersk, osg, apl and many more.
but aren’t they used in the local interamerica trade lanes?
that is, none in the Persian Gulf?
Are you talking about the Maersk Tigris incident today or the Maersk Kensington incident on Friday? According to CNN the Maersk Kensington is US-flagged.
They go all over the world just like any other international shipping company.
There are US flagged ships in that area as well.
OK..... I’m badly behind the times
I edited your post a bit to answer your question for you.
Largely to avoid regulations on hiring US nationals, plus other US regulations on hiring, safety, etc.
Except for the fact that it's a Danish owned ship crewed by Europeans and Asians.
