In 19.9 percent of American families in 2014, according to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), no one in the family worked.
A family, as defined by the BLS, is a group of two or more persons residing together who are related by birth, marriage, or adoption. In 2014, there were 80,889,000 families in the United States, and in 16,057,000 of those families, or 19.9 percent, no one had a job.
The BLS designates a person as employed if during the survey reference week they (a) did any work at all as paid employees; (b) worked in their own business, profession, or on their own farm; (c) or worked 15 hours or more as unpaid workers in an enterprise operated by a member of the family.
Members of the 16,057,000 families in which no one held jobs could have been either unemployed or not in the labor force. The BLS designates a person as unemployed if they did not have a job but were actively seeking one. The BLS designates someone as not in the labor force, if they did not have a job and were not actively seeking one.
The BLS has been tracking data on employment in families since 1995. That year, the percent of families in which no one had a job was 18.8 percent. The percentage hit an all-time high of 20.2 percent in 2011. It held steady at 20 percent in 2012 and 2013. In 2014, it declined to 19.9 percent.
The BLS also calculates these data for single-parent families. In 25.6 percent of families maintained by women with no spouse present, no family member is employed. In 17 percent of families maintained by men with no spouse present, no family member is employed.
The data on employment in families is based on the Census Bureaus Current Population Survey of the civilian non-institutional population, which includes people 16 and older, who are not on active duty in the military or in an institution such as a prison, nursing home or mental hospital.
It was about 3 out of 5 in the cab. Maybe on average a woman in the car would be a grandma by early thirties.
Well, in other words, they collectively vote for a living.
How is that even possible?
I’ve always worked, guess I just don’t know how to not work. Must take special knowledge.
Obviously these statistics are wrong. Obama says the unemployment rate is 5.5% and stocks are at all-time highs. Life is wonderful.
That leaves more time for community organizing and rioting.
I’ll say it again - A Federal Reserve that can monetize government debt at will, boost inflation to reduce future obligations and steal from taxpayers, suppress interest rates and print fiat currency is the absolute foundation of the progressive/socialist state.
How else do you get 100 million Americans receiving a government check or 20% of all families having no one working? And remember - these people will never vote to dismantle the present system.
That’s why he wants mandatory voting!! what a @#@#$
Not surprised. 2 more of the 5 aren’t worth hiring and 1 is probably illegal.
I agree with you, but most Republicans are against us.
They love the power that comes with a printing press as much as the Democrats.
Think of how much power this shifted towards the Federal Government vs the States.
Those families have given up on the American dream for one reason or another. They are content or, in the case of those medically unable to work, relieved to be on the public dole.
all according to plan ...
About 60 million people received Social Security benefits in 2014, CBO estimates.
Just for giggles, throw in everyone over the age of 62, sucking off the Taxpayer Teat via Social Security.
That leaves you, me and that minimum wage barista at Starbucks supporting them all!
Ain’t Life Grand? *SPIT*
Note that in 2010, the first of the baby boomers turned 65. That could account for some of the increase.
Which is why 2016 winner will have the best economic message which resonates with voters.
The best military message or best social message won’t be enough.
Lots of people took early retirement.
We all know what happens when the ratio of tax-users to tax-payers gets to great.
18 trillion in debt?
This is a bogus statistic, or rather it does not actually mean what it seems to mean: if you check the latest census data, over 12% of “families” under this definition, have two members age 65 and over, and another 10% plus have one member age 65 or over. A goodly percentage of the “families” in which no one is working are not welfare sponges, not poor folks tossed out of their job by the recession or replacement by foreigners on H1-B visas, but married couples living on retirement income.
