Emergency services were battling on Tuesday to prevent Ukraine’s largest forest fire since 1992 from spreading towards the abandoned Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Prime Minister Arseny Yatseniuk said.
Earlier, the interior ministry had warned that high winds were blowing the fire in northern Ukraine towards Chernobyl, where in 1986 a reactor fire led to the world’s worst nuclear disaster.

In February, international experts warned that a large amount of dangerous isotopes remained in the forests near Chernobyl, which could be spread by forest fires.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the reactor itself because that’s encased in concrete. Residual radiation in the vegetation and old wood buildings would be the bigger concern.

Interestingly, Russia Today was first on the spot reporting on this. I don’t recall a similar response to the massive fires in Russia recently. Hmmmm.

Your concern for the welfare of the Ukraine people in this case is duly noted and appreciated. It’s unfortunately you don’t feel the same for the 85 kids blow out of the sky with a Russian missile on MH17. Or the carpet bombing of Ukrainian cities by Russian rocket artillery. Is that “effective help” from Moscow also?
