On Tuesday night, two Australian citizens were executed by firing squad in Indonesia for drug trafficking. It's been a major news story in Australia, particularly pushed by the left wing bleeding heart press, although a lot of Australian conservatives are also opposed to the death penalty, and Australia has a bipartisan policy of doing whatever is diplomatically possible to advocate for Australians facing execution overseas.

But some of what is happening now is getting quite ridiculous - we have High Schools pushing a very clear political agenda on their children (as a secondary school teacher myself, this drives me crazy - I believe it is my overwhelming role to teach kids how to think, not what to think) and the Australian Catholic University creating scholarships in memory of the drug smugglers...

Never mind the politics - what message is this sending to kids about illegal drugs?

When I was quite young -- 1960s -- I remember a Public Service Announcement which featured a number of people doing and saying things against drugs, but the 5 second piece of it that I really remember was a long-haired, very bearded Hippie, wearing some poncho/blanket thing, very seriously explaining that if he were traveling in a foreign country, he would be smart enough not to carry any drugs. It just wasn't worth it.

It was probably a cheesy spot, and I haven't seen it in about 45+ years --

But I remember it.

Stupid people who break laws and do it in the wrong spot should not be idolized by anyone.
