Joe Namath, one of the most charismatic players in NFL history and one of the game's greatest quarterbacks, said today that if he'd known then what he knows now about concussions, he would never have played football.
Namath, who has recently undergone treatment for brain injuries, was asked in an interview with Tiffany Kenney of ABC's West Palm Beach, Florida, affiliate WPBF-TV whether would still play the game, given all he has learned about the effects of concussions.
"No," he said. "I hate to say that because if I had a child who wanted to play I'd let them play ... but I'd wait 'til he developed a little more.

Namath was one the first of new style, quick release qbs. There were great passing qbs like Unitas, Sonny Jurgenson, and Y.A. Tittle, but Namath was the first qb I saw who had a quick release. Starr was a great qb, but although he was very accurate, he only had a mediocre arm. He won with his brain.

Namath was a great running QB up until he hurt his knee playing for Bama.

Namath deserves to be called one of the best. You can only really gauge a player in the era that they played. Namath was the dominant QB in the NFL in ‘69 and the AFL in ‘68 and won a SB in the bargain. Nobody get a ring for stats.
Was a good running QB at Bama until his first knee injury, and was a good basketball player. He played on a bad knee` from his sophomore year on, two bad knees all during his pro career.

Roll Tide! Without football, Namath would be a total unknown.
This is the plain truth.
However, the sport has gone over the line of human body tolerance. NO ONE is made to take the sort of punishment which the best are capable of dishing out in this time.
