Joe Namath, one of the most charismatic players in NFL history and one of the game's greatest quarterbacks, said today that if he'd known then what he knows now about concussions, he would never have played football.

Namath, who has recently undergone treatment for brain injuries, was asked in an interview with Tiffany Kenney of ABC's West Palm Beach, Florida, affiliate WPBF-TV whether would still play the game, given all he has learned about the effects of concussions.

"No," he said. "I hate to say that because if I had a child who wanted to play I'd let them play ... but I'd wait 'til he developed a little more.

Nice list. F. Tark started at QB in 3 SB’s tho I do believe. Good to see Otto G. in there. A lot of the lists these days overlook him.

Oh, yeah! I read Joe’s autobiography in 1970. It was titled “I CAN’T WAIT FOR TOMORROW BECAUSE I GET BETTER LOOKIN’ EACH DAY.”

Why would I "be all in for banning football"?

This is a Free Republic, isn't it?

No, the associated legal costs (i.e., - the lawyers) will eat the sport alive.

Eventually, many of the best will also realize that dain bramaged is no way to go through life.

And in their first two picks tonight, they went for linemen! Guess it’s gonna be Johnny Puffball after all...

Joe Namath, one of the most charismatic players in NFL history and one of the game’s greatest quarterbacks

Uh, no.

Incorrect.

Joe was certainly one of the greatest.

I remember in his book, Bear Bryant described Namath as the best athlete he ever coached which surprised me. I knew he was a great QB but didn’t know about his athleticism.

Joe was the best basketball player on campus at the time. He was the best baseball player. And maybe the best golfer on campus at the time.

Joe almost played linebacker at UA.

He was the best athlete in college football until her hurt his knee. He was just an incredible athlete.

Sounds like Namath wants in on the gravy train.

I believe that’s already a done deal.

Joe is doing just fine.

A lot of those guys were system QBs. They didn’t throw the ball 15 - 20 times per game in a lot of Joe’s era.

history and one of the game’s greatest quarterbacks
= = = = = = = = = = = = =

He certainly was the ‘poster boy’ for the age old statement

“IT AIN’T BRAGGING IF YOU CAN DO IT”.

I wonder if he would still strike those ‘sexy poses’ in panty hose in the enlightened world of today.

He’s way too old to play. He’d get wrecked.
I think only Cleveland would pick him right now.

He could play third string for the Cardinals.

>>19. Donovan McNabb (5 NFC championship appearances, 5 pro bowls, and one of the greatest scramblers of all time)

Dude, this is just idiotic. McNabb wasn’t a top 20 QB during the time he played. He’s not a top 200 all time.

I remember a photo of Y.A. Tittle kneeling after a game, looking really tired and covered with blood and sweat.

I remember that picture too. I did not like the NY Giants, still don't like them, but I had to feel a little sorry for old Y.A. that day. He got beat down.

didn’t he get a broken leg right on the field?

Joe Theisman did. As far as I can remember, Joe Namath did not.

If it wasn’t for football,Joe Namath would be a plumber and nobody would give a good GD about his opinion on anything outside of a clogged toilet.
