Zactly.

There may be a great defense for the cops in this case also. The other case was nuts from the start.

This one, not so much. There is no evidence or witness that corroborates the cops behavior on any level, starting with the arrest without cause. From there it accelerates down hill against the cops.

We haven’t heard really anything for the cops defense, however.

It’s a good sign they charged all of the officers... it will assist in getting to the bottom of this, as those not culpable will have the impetus to speak honestly. Even if it means it was an “accident” and not malicious intent.

The Mayor should resign, seeing as how it happened on her watch.

That’s what they demanded Giuliani to do after Amadou Diallo.

The police union is calling for a special investigator given the ties of the state prosecutor Marilyn Mosley to the donor supporter who is the attorney for the Gray family.

It is being reported that there was no probable cause to arrest Freddie Gray, according to the State Attorney.

Fail.

"Freddie Gray was arrested for carrying a knife that turns out was legal to carry."
==============================
Maryland State Law:
http://pweb.netcom.com/~brlevine/md.txt
(c) Prohibited.- (1) A person may not wear or carry a dangerous weapon of any kind concealed on or about the person. (2) A person may not wear or carry a dangerous weapon, chemical mace, pepper mace, or a tear gas device openly with the intent or purpose of injuring an individual in an unlawful manner.

The problem that I have with this case at this time is that right now, based upon evidence known to the public, I don’t see the elements of many of the charges that were filed.

It looks to me like it was a sort of shotgun approach to charging them. let’s throw everything at them and maybe some of it will stick.

Basically, it does not look to me like careful thought, planning and preparation went into these charges.

But I could be wrong, I don’t know what information they have that I don’t have.

Mosby and the mayor heard plenty from Sharpton yesterday.

If that is indeed the governing statute there, it seems like his pocket knife is covered by (1), switch blade or not, and the arrest was legal.

Looks like the prosecutor is taking the opposite approach than McCulloch took in the Mike Brown case. He knew he had a weak case, and rather than please the mob, he looked at it strictly from a legal point of view.

Here it seems that they're trying to please the mob, and hoped the legal case pans out. Who knows, they could get some plea deals, the could get some convictions. They might also get a messy trial that will upset the mob even more.

That's the thing about mobs, if you try to please them, they will often find something else to get angry at.

Yep, I definitely agree.

These charges really seem politically motivated to me, as opposed to being motivated by gathered evidence.

However, I must also note that perhaps she does have evidence that I don’t yet know about.

"WHY be a cop if you cant arrest drug dealers..?"

That's one of the most frustrating things about doing the job, that is...not being allowed to do the job as trained. Also frustrating is filing the proper paperwork and evidence on an arrest, and having the DA/Judge drop charges, fail to prosecute, or cut them loose with no consequences, ie., Freddie Gray's arrest record (and I've seen worse than his). Criminals rarely do the time for the actual crimes they commit. They're either let go, or plea their charges down. After a while, you don't even want to do the job. Why bother when it won't go anywhere.

I was a Sergeant in NY's prison system. I had an inmate in the box who told me he would hurt himself if I didn't move him to the facility hospital. Seeing as he had previous attempts to injure himself, I spoke to my Lieutenant who authorized me to put him in one of the locked hospital rooms where he could be viewed by uniform staff, and seen by medical staff. I moved the inmate as directed without any problems.

Not long afterwards I received a call from the Captain on my shift. He questioned my putting the inmate in the hospital. I explained my reasons. He told me I would have to move him back to the box. I explained to him about the threats the inmate was making about hurting himself, but he didn't care. This Captain was a loser anyway, and so I told him that if he wanted the inmate back in the box, to do it himself, and I hung up on him. Later that evening, I was called up to his office. Besides chastising me for hanging up on him, he wanted to know who had given me authorization to move him in the first place. I refused to tell him as I wasn't going to snitch on my Watch Commander. I ended up getting a write-up in my record, but who cares. I did what I thought was right at the time.

This was only one of the incidents that I experienced during my 25 year career. Our jobs became micro-managed by the Administration and Albany, and we were second-guessed on everything. They didn't want us to do our jobs. They just wanted us to let things slide, and not create any problems. That's because the members of the facility Administration were political appointees, who owed their positions to some sugar daddy in Albany. They didn't want to have too many problems for fear they'd look bad to the big wigs in Albany.

He was arrested on March 13th and 20th. We don’t know if those cases had been heard yet, or what dispositions there were...if any. We don’t know if he was under any court-ordered restrictions at the time. You don’t need an arrest warrant to take someone in for suspicion of a crime, or for questioning. You need probable cause.
