Pro-Putin bikers lay wreath in Vienna en route to Berlin

VIENNA (AP) — Members of a nationalistic Russian bikers club were greeted by cheering supporters as they laid a wreath Saturday at a monument to the Soviet soldiers who liberated Vienna from the Nazis.

The pro-Kremlin Night Wolves are commemorating the Russian and Allied defeat of Nazi Germany 70 years ago in World War II with a ride from Moscow that is meant to end in Berlin May 9. Some EU officials have expressed criticism of their plans and Poland denied them entry, reflecting strains between Warsaw and Moscow over Russia's role in the Ukraine conflict.

In contrast, their reception in Vienna was strikingly free of tensions. Accompanied by more than a dozen supporters, two group members wearing their colors and displaying flapping Russian flags on their motorcycles, drove up to the central Vienna square to the monument depicting Russian soldiers in a martial pose. Assisted by soldiers from the Russian embassy, they then laid a wreath at the structure, erected by the Soviets after their liberation of Vienna.

Police spokesman Patrick Mayerhofer said a police escort accompanied the group to Vienna from the Slovak capital of Bratislava.

Police estimated that about 500 spectators turned up for the event. Some wore t-shirts with portraits of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Others held signs saying "Stop Russia Phobia," and "We are brothers and sisters — no war."

Well I suppose if I was Viennese, I would have been happy having been liberated from the Nazis by the Allies, but not including the Russians. Cheering for pro-putin biker nazis doesn’t make sense to me. They’re damn lucky the other Allies didn’t give the Soviets Austria along with the rest of Eastern Europe. They lucked out, especially since Hitler was of Austrian birth. Just sayin’.

The Kremlin’s Troll Army: Moscow is financing legions of pro-Russia Internet commenters:

A June article by Max Seddon of BuzzFeed reported the Kremlin was spending millions of dollars to pay English-speaking Russians to promote President Vladimir Putin and his policies in U.S. media like Fox News broadcasting and The Huffington Post and Politico news sites. Trolls are reportedly expected to manage multiple fake accounts and post on news articles 50 times a day, often with sentiments as simplistic as “Putin makes Obama look stupid and weak!”

Horror! You probably should post ‘Lies! Obama strong!’ no less than 100 times a day to counter such a vicious enemy propaganda.

And please, stay on topic while posting to the thread. Thank you!

No biggie. Austria has been brown nosing the USSR and now Russia for decades. It’s no surprise they rolled out the red carpet for Putin’s bootlickers.

Austria is a neutral state and its State Treaty obligations precludes it from membership in NATO.

Russia played a vital role in WWII. It doesn’t hurt anyone to remember, celebrate, and say “thank you” again. History is history. I’m not saying their government of that era was good. But the people of Russia did the world a great service at a very crucial time — and they paid a very high price with many lost lives.

I don’t mind remembering and saying “thank you.”

Yes, without their sacrifice the Russians could never have enslaved so many people and put so many into the Gulag.

Without their sacrifice, the whole world might be ruled by Nazis right now — whatever population was deemed worthy to procreate that is. Much of the world might be nothing but dust in the fields surrounding crematories.

And without Stalin’s oil and assistance how many people Hitler could safely invade Poland, had fuel and resources to fight England and France. Without the Pact between Stalin and Hitler, there might not have been any need for Russian sacrifices. Without their commitment to Hilter, they’d have accepted all the information passed to them that Operation Barbarossa was imminent on 22 Jun 41.

Keep in mind too that Russians have a habit of preferring tyranny over freedom from the Romanovs to the Communitist to Putin. It’s pretty shabby track record. They’ve always preferred to be a nation of drunks ruled by a small clique of thugs. They die young because they’ve no self-control and no common sense. They’re so chauvinistic that they want to stop their weak neighbors for being weak and for scaring Russia. Not a very cool group of people.

Everyone was signing pacts with Hitler at that time.

Your hatred toward Russians reminds me of Arabs’ hatred toward Jews. You have lost your ability to be anywhere near rational.

The United States could certainly be criticized for not helping more than we did until we were bombed by Japan. There is a lot of criticism of early reactions to go around. It doesn’t nullify the good that was done in the end.
