That's the tragic "rest of the story." German communities in Eastern Europe, some centuries old, were wiped out and/or pushed west.
After what the Nazis did to the Poles and Russians, they were in no mood to be gracious. The war in the East was brutal.

Yes, the Americans gave German POWs to the French to use as slave labor after the war.
