'Hot Chocolate lead singer Errol Brown has died aged 71, his manager has said.

Brown had liver cancer and died at his home in the Bahamas, said Phil Dale.

Hot Chocolate had hits in more than 50 countries worldwide, including You Sexy Thing - which Brown co-wrote - It Started with a Kiss and Every One's a Winner.

Brown was made an MBE by the Queen in 2003 and received an Ivor Novello award for his outstanding contribution to British music in 2004.

You Sexy Thing, Hot Chocolate's best-known hit and a top 10 single in the 1970s and '80s, charted again in the UK when it was featured in The Full Monty in 1997.'

Very sad news.

71 is still no age. So lucky to see the great man live in 2005, Hot Chocolate were a great and underrated band, as British soul music has been.

RIP big man.

If you listen closely to that song and deconstruct it’s various elements....the wailing overmodulated vocals, the pretentious strings, the proto-synthesized popcorn machine, the twangy porn guitar....it’s utterly ridiculous.

You look at that and think “who on earth thought to put these elements together, and thought it could work?”

And yet, it did.

RIP.

I remember his band, He wrote and produced some very enjoyable music, popular to this day. At first, I thought about Errol Garner, the jazz pianist who played ‘Misty’.

Hot Chocolate: Hot Chocolate - Every 1’s a Winner

You probably recognize the riff from Rush Limbaugh.

It was the quintessential mid-70s song, right on the cusp of disco taking over.

The lavishness of production, the overguilding and experimenting was one of the predominate styles of that day.
Synthesizers were still something exotic and mystifying to the average listener. Everything was ‘overdone’ and in some pieces each musician had a showcasing moment where they whooped it up even higher. Think Donna Summer in Love to Love You Baby, or McArthur Park.
