Big Bird almost had a seat on the doomed Challenger space shuttle which exploded just seconds after take-off in 1986, killing seven people onboard, a documentary on the beloved "Sesame Street" character has revealed.
"It made my scalp crawl to think I was supposed to be on that," Caroll Spinney, the man who has donned the 8-foot-2 yellow bird costume since 1969, recalled.
NASA had initially wanted Spinney to be sent into space to get children more excited about its space program, according to the film "I Am Bird Bird."

Uhh; the Challenger accident had nothing to do with who was INSIDE the shuttle.
6 Chuck Yeagers inside wouldn’t have made a whits worth of difference.
It blew up because of issues outside of it.
What an idiotic idea!
That would’ve traumatized kids for generations seeing Big Bird blow up on tv. They’d have had to write him out of “Sesame Street” or it would’ve confused the kids seeing him the next week with a different actor in the suit.

They probably would have made a big deal about it before launch. Imagine all the traumatized kids, parents turning off the TVs and having to have explain.
It’s ok kids, Big Bird flew back down to Earth! Just a couple singed feathers, he’ll be fine!
I know what caused the accident, dude.
My point is that NASA's focus on sending "diversity crews" up into space was symptomatic of an agency that wasn't taking things like crew safety seriously anymore.
You forgot to mention that one of the “white guys” on the Challenger crew was a Hawaiian dude.
There is no confirmation
Big Bird asked but there is no confirmation his request was actually considered by NASA
btw...... i’m bert, not Bert
More like "women think space is exciting, right up to the point where they think about the possibility of it ending in their flaming deaths". Then it's "let the guys do it".
Also, you notice the percentage of white guys in the serious combat jobs, versus who is over-represented in the back-lines supply and support jobs?
One guy in top photo looks Asian.
Is that a twofer?
The Leftist media would classify him as a Whitey McCracker-Honkey since they do so well in school and thus should not be thought of or classified as a minority.
Yes, gay.
