Pentagon Employees Used Government Credit Cards for ‘Adult Entertainment’
Washington Free Beacon ^ | 5/6/2015 | Elizabeth Harrington

Pentagon employees are using their government credit cards to gamble and pay for escorts, according to an audit report.

Politico reported Wednesday:

A Defense Department audit has found that a significant number of Pentagon employees used their government credit cards to gamble and pay for “adult entertainment” — findings that are expected to lead department officials to issue stern new warnings.

The audit of “Government Travel Charge Transactions” by the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General, which is to be made public in coming weeks, found that both civilian and military employees used the credit cards at casinos and for escort services and other adult activities — particularly in Las Vegas and Atlantic City.

A Pentagon official briefed on some of the findings stressed that the federal government did not necessarily pay the charges; holders of the cards pay their own bills and then submit receipts to be reimbursed for expenses related to their government business.

The official said that the employees may have used the government cards for gambling and escort services in order to shield the charges from spouses.

Misuse of government credit cards is a common problem among federal agencies. U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) employees racked up $192.2 million in potentially “questionable transactions,” sometimes using government cards at bowling alleys and barbershops.

Department of Transportation (DOT) employees have also used their government credit cards for cash advances at casinos and racetracks.

Why is it just the Pentagon being investigated? I have to think there are other government agencies whose abuse is far, far worse.

And then there's the money we pay to worthless organizations like the UN ...

I agree we should go after the abusers. But let's go after ALL of them, not just the select few.

...and it’s been going on for decades since government credit cards were first issued to ALL agencies, not just DoD.

As long as they say, “we will work to ensure this never happens again”, then it’s all good. (/s)

Of course, if this happened in the corporate world, you would be out on your *ss instantly, and when you got home there would be a process server waiting for you with a lawsuit for the money. And you can bet that the company would spend five times that money to recover it, as a lesson to others.

It must be great working for the government - I remember in the Clinton era, Boortz had on a former CEO of a hotel chain who was caught fooling around with his DEFINITELY ADULT secretary. He was gone in a heartbeat, and due to some sort of “morals clause” in his contract he lost his parachute and pension too.

The thing not mentioned here is that Government Credit cards come in two flavors. There is a Government Purchase Card and then there is a Government Travel Card. I highly doubt many of these suspicious transactions are on Government Purchase Cards, since they are highly scrutinized although they have been abused.

I suspect most of these transactions (99%) are on Government Travel Cards, which are sort of sponsored travel accounts in the employees name. The employees are responsible for the bill, not the Government, and if you don’t pay, you get hassled at work about it by your boss.

I could normally care less about how goverment employees run up bills in thier own name, but this is not what the cards are for. They are to be used for travel expenses such as hotels, rental cars etc.

However, some people are irresponsible and they misuse the cards in all sorts of ways since they are just regular credit cards, but this does not mean the bill goes to the taxpayer.

Stern warnings, like, “don’t get caught or it might be put on your permanent record?”.

I’ve worked in companies where we had those types of cards; THEY were ALSO scrutinized. If anything more than a small, incidental amount wasn’t expensed, you would get a call, whether or not you paid your part of the bill on time.
