Anti-eviction protesters held a rally and sit-in at San Francisco City Hall Friday demanding to speak with Mayor Ed Lee about ending displacement in the Mission District, police and protesters said.
Dozens of protesters gathered at City Hall today holdings signs with slogans such as, "Affordable Housing Now," "No Artists, No Culture," and "Stop Evictions."
San Francisco Supervisor Jane Kim, who represents the South of Market neighborhood and who has an office in City Hall, met with protesters and expressed her support.
Members of her staff held up a sign today that read, "Sup. Jane Kim Stands w/ the Mission."
The protest comes just three days after San Francisco Supervisor David Campos introduced an emergency ordinance to temporarily halt market-rate housing development in the city's Mission District in an effort to stop displacement of residents in that neighborhood. Critics of that ordinance, such as the San Francisco Housing Action Coalition, argue that bringing all new market-rate housing production to a halt would only exacerbate the crisis and create further displacement.
The San Francisco Housing Action Coalition maintains that since the 2012 elimination of the Redevelopment Agency, market-rate housing production has become the top creator of new permanently affordable housing in the city.
Campos, who represents the Mission District, said that the interim emergency ordinance would "establish a moratorium on all market-rate housing in the Mission for the next 45 days."
He said the moratorium would allow the city a chance to update zoning controls in the Mission and create new polices to stem displacement. It would also allow an opportunity to identify revenue sources for affordable housing and develop a plan to build thousands of units of affordable housing.
San Francisco police spokeswoman Officer Grace Gatpandan said at about 2:45 p.m. Friday that the sheriff's department is monitoring the protest from inside City Hall and police are standing by outside.
She said law enforcement officials are reporting that there are roughly 150 protesters inside City Hall and that, so far, it is a peaceful protest.
Why don’t they camp out on Mayor Lee’s Lawn?
Illegal immigrants camp out here in the USA all the time, so by the transitive property this group of malcontents should have no problem camping out on a mayor’s lawn.... Especially in a sanctuary city...

That's what I hear. A former boss of mine owned a rental home in SF. It took him a couple years and a lawsuit to evict the tenant. Meanwhile, the tenant destroyed much of the property, chopping walls and flooring, removed door and lighting hardware among other things. Major loss for my boss without getting compensated. My wife and I are remodeling her mom's home in SF, and we refuse to rent it out because of fears of tenant "rights". Wife is executor of her mom's trust, and a couple of her siblings were pushing us to rent it while mom is in assisted living, but our lawyer succeeded in getting their lawyer to back off. Other friends have taken property off rental in SF, as tenants seem to have more rights than landlords. Crazy.

You are absolutely correct! Areas east of the Mission (over on Potrero Hill and 3rd St.) used to be ghetto-like housing, but now with FB and Google staffing up, and their employees wanting to live in the city, those areas are now very upscale and expensive places to live. It only follows that The Mission District will experience the same explosive transformation. I worked in the area in the 1970’s and it wasn’t a place you wanted to be after dark, now it’s a completely different story and the low-income (mostly minority) folks are not going to be able to stay no matter what the government tries to do.

His very misguided proposal would only affect a 20 block area called the Mission District. It would not solve any problems and create new ones.
A wise move.
