Nope, Jon Stewart, $1 trillion wasn’t spent on Afghanistan schools at the expense of Baltimore.
Washington Post ^ | April 30, 2015 | Glenn Kessler

“If we are spending a trillion dollars to rebuild Afghanistan’s schools, we can’t, you know, put a little taste Baltimore’s way. It’s crazy.”

–Jon Stewart, “The Daily Show,” April 28, 2015

Using USAID’s ForeignAssistance.gov Web site, one can drill down to individual programs in Afghanistan year after year. For basic education in Afghanistan, the number is about $100 million annually. Adding higher education boosts the spending about $30 million a year. For instance, in 2012 and 2013, the total spent on education in Afghanistan was $128.6 million and $115.1 million, respectively.

Now let’s compare that to the federal spending for the city of Baltimore. According to city budget documents, the federal contribution to Baltimore schools was $184.8 million in 2012 and $169.3 million in 2013. (Most of the more than $1.2 billion budget comes from state and county funding sources.)

The contrast was even greater in 2011: $95 million for Afghanistan schools and $265 million for Baltimore schools. That’s because the 2009 stimulus bill bolstered funding for schools for several years.

Moreover, in the period the United States spent $104 billion overall on Afghanistan, the United States funneled about $400 billion to cities and states just for elementary and secondary education.

We sought a comment from a spokesman for Stewart but did not receive a reply.

you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink

you can force a baltimore kid to school but you can’t make him think

the problem of baltimore schools is the well researched theme of one season of The Wire. Even when there seems to be success the community snatches it away.

An idiotic assertion by the court jester isn’t a lie, it’s a pointless provocation. Glenn Kessler has too much time on his hands.

Sad. I read where only 11% of Baltimore 4th grade students in 2011 could read proficient or higher. If a kid cannot read/lacks the most basic means of learning-he/she has a tough road ahead. After I read that figure the reading stats for HS grads makes sense. How do folks living generation after generation on welfare dare blame others for their failure? I honestly believe it is the easy way out. A neighbor who has spent vast sums sending his daughter to the best catholic schools in the city told me yesterday that she is two months pregnant and has quit college. He believes he has failed as she refuses to get a job, plus insists a prior boyfriend move in his house etc. He is devastated as is the mother.

This so-called unfunny comedian can get away with this because he’s a marxist libtard. Being a libtard means you never have to say you’re sorry.

Unfortunately, a lot of our 20 - 40 years old consider him to be their only news source. So, he can get away with anything he wants to say.

They say many of the millennial's get their "news" from the Jon Stewart Comedy Central show instead of conventional news sources. If that's the case, I can see why many of them don't have a clue about what is going on in this country or the world.

It would be like my generation getting our news from Howdy Doody.

Im not his biggest fan, but its pretty clear he means in the larger sense,,, IE, nation building = rebuilding nations schools. I seriously doubt this was a reference to a line item in the 13 billion a year we give to those animals.
This came from the recent report that the total for the Afghan war was a little over a trillion.
And im also no Baltimore fan, but id rather waste it in American cities than on a bunch of goat humpers who steal huge percentages of it and flood the world with heroin.

This is a rather lame effort here in WaPo to justify the fortune wasted in Afghanistan

I remember reading about that story and how one single federal judge, Russell Clark ordered the whole thing. I thought to myself how can one stinking federal judge be allowed to appropriate the hard-earned money of taxpayers. Almost two billion dollars worth flushed down a rathole.

Who gave the power to that petty fascist bast..d to do things like that? Something is really rotten when these robed tyrants are given that kind of power.

Hell, I've got a flaming lib HS classmate that's 60 years old, same as me, that posts Liebowicz's (Stewart's real last name) crap on Facebook all the time like it's scribed on tablets brought down from the mount. His dad ran the local small-town pharmacy for years and my classmate has no concept of business reality that allowed him to live the good life when growing up. His eventual career??? Social worker at a state corrections facility.

Yeah, I've got a flaming lib younger brother who thinks Stewart and Colbert are the ultimate truth tellers of their generation. I actually read a lot more liberal literature than he does, but he thinks all the news anyone needs is on Stewart's and Colbert's shows.

Of course, Colbert doesn't host his show anymore and Stewart is about to leave. I'm sure my brother will find new social justice heroes with the new hosts.

Doesn’t anybody realize what Jon Stewart is by now? He’s a great exaggerator for the purpose of shock value. In the beginning, he wasn’t bad. As time went on, he became gross to the point I stopped watching him early on.

Something is wrong that she would even draw breath to ask, demand, or otherwise indicate that her boyfriend should live under her parents’ roof.
