At the same time as the Rodney King trial, a black guy (repeat offender, you name it) named Malice Green (no, I didn't make that up, and it's not a name ripped from some number of X-Men or DC Comics) was jugged on a Chinese takeout menu of charges. Guy was just bad through and through. Two Detroit cops interrogated the hell out of Green, after which he expired (causes unknown). The two policemen were indicted, and they drew a jury of 11 blacks and one white shoe salesman. The white guy had some questions about the evidence, and as soon as he spoke up (by the way, he was invited on ABC's Nightline where he told his story), 11 pair of glittering, hate-filled eyes turned on him as one, and the other jurors had no qualms about threatening him and coercing him to change his vote to "guilty". He caved, the cops were convicted and drew something like 25 years, and "soshuh justiss" was served up in the People's Republic of Detroit.

Webster County, Iowa, where Northwood is located, has a population of about 36,000, of which less than 5% are black - less than 2,000. It will be hard to get a jury with any significant number of blacks. Chances are a large percentage of blacks in the county knew and or are related to the perp (sorry, “alleged” perp), the victim, or both.
I wonder. If I’m charged with a crime in D.C., and find myself staring at a mostly black jury, can I demand a jury of whites?

Hey, to serve on a jury you can’t be a convicted felon or have outstanding warrants for your arrest. This explains most of these situations.
It does because the system is as corrupt as many of the accused.
Or you could have a Jury consisting of 12 instances (aliases) of the same ‘Rat voter.
I have been struck by how few blacks there were in the jury room every time I have been called for jury duty. The county's racial makeup is a fairly close reflection of the national average, so a lack of blacks living in the county isn't the problem.
The jury room demographics seemed to better reflect the 6:20 AM Express train into Penn Station than the county as a whole (white men and women dressed in "business casual" attire pecking at laptops or reading the Wall Street Journal, and generally looking fairly annoyed.)
My first thought was, "Hmmmmmm, black people must have somehow figured out some secret way to get themselves out of this" followed by, "Oh, yeah, that's right...."
Justice should be blind to skin color, including the skin color of the accused and the jury. And if some pathetic lawyer appeals based on the jury's race, that appeal should be rejected. Accused murderers should be judged based on the content of their character, or lack thereof, and not the color of their skin. Tyrone is not entitled to a jury of 41 year-old black males who hate their wives, just to a jury of residents of the district in which the crime was committed.
Good point. Oh, I was incorrect when I stated “there should have been two or three more blacks on the jury”. Should have said “two or three more blacks in the jury pool”. Big difference. My bad :)
And that sounds like evidence of racism. If the judge goes very far down this road, we get to the point that defendants need to be judged by a jury that is the same as they are and then the victims can petition that the jury must reflect the victim's status. The legal system has become more and more complex and burdened and this will add another straw to the camel's back.

In UK the jury is essentially chosen at random. The actual jury pool is only 20, and challenges are strictly limited.
Empaneling a jury generally takes no more than a couple hours, rather than the weeks or months it sometimes takes in high profile US cases.
A jury pool is SUPPOSED to be randomly selected. At one time we were all considered to be ‘Americans.’ We would get our jury duty notice and dutifully serve our time.
The system has gotten to the point where the jurors are now on trial. Some have even been ‘convicted’ for well thought out verdicts. The majority of jurors take their jobs seriously. It is a travesty to imply that race will cause people to throw a trial.
The influx of racism by this Administration, community activists, and the MSM has ruined our justice system.
