An Iowa judge has dismissed a 112-member jury pool after determining that a black man charged with murder couldn't get a fair trial when all but one potential juror is white.
Tyrone Washington Jr., 41, of Northwood is accused in the August 2013 stabbing death of his ex-girlfriend, 30-year-old Justina Smith, the Globe Gazette reported.
Defense attorney Charles Kenville requested to have the entire jury pool stricken, and District Judge Colleen Weiland on Tuesday granted his motion.
Out of the 112 people in the jury pool, 111 had identified themselves as white. One juror identified himself as Native American.
Kenville said the lack of racial diversity wasn't intentional but that 'the system is broken in Webster County and this court needs to fix it for Mr. Washington's rights to be upheld.'

This might be a problem. There are several counties in the state where it’s a 95-percent white population, and half of the remaining folks are Latino. It’s like going to Salt Lake City....you just won’t find too many minority groups.
I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that whatever blacks may live in that community probably don’t qualify for jury service.
Unfortunately an all white jury would likely lead to an appeal.
It shouldn’t but it is what it is.

I looked up Webster County, Iowa. Hispanics are 2.3 percent of the population, blacks are 3.4 percent, and whites make up 93 percent. The county has been losing people since the 1970s...no jobs and limited business opportunities.
I’m starting to see this ‘too many whites’ nonsense in sports as well. Houston Astros a couple of years ago criticized by the sports media for being too white. Last year ‘why are there so few black men in major league baseball?’. Earlier this year a sports writer questioned why the Patriots didn’t have a majority of blacks. And one pro football coach (Chip Kelly I think) was criticized for drafting too many whites.
I’m sure there are tons of other examples in various walks of life as well. When people complain this is a racist and bigoted country, I agree with them - but not for the reasons they think.

You got it right. I bothered to look up the 2010 census demographics for Webster County; whites 93.6% blacks 3.3%. So, based upon the population mix there should have been two or three more blacks on the jury.
In Obama’s post racial America, I damn sure wouldn’t want to face an all black jury.
When I worked at the unemployment office in Des Moines one of our people, a black social worker, was on jury duty so often we hardly ever saw her. Of course, we couldn’t fire and replace her, so the other people in the section just had to take over her case load.

The racial makeup of the county was 93.39% White, 3.39% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.10% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 2.35% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Well....the one issue to jury duty is that you have to be registered. If you walked around to the 3.3 percent blacks and asked who was registered to vote....I’d take a guess that only fifty percent of those over the age of 18 are registered.

If we are gonna diversify.....why are there so few fat white women in the NBA, NFL, and MBL?
