It has already been reported he remembers up to the point of going into the curve. Coherence and actions performed at the time of the event is not going to be related to after the fact patchy memory that is perfectly natural with these types of concussions which often come back gradually over a period of weeks. If there was even a projectile it was minutes before the accident whereas the speed up was a minute or so before.
Top speed of the Acela train is 120 miles an hour.
He was 14 miles an hour from the top speed.
Sounds more and more like what happened with the Germanwings flight, gay terrorism against straight people.
The investigators need to get a hold of his cell phone data in the past month and his wereabouts online.

I think we’ll find out this was a suicide attempt and he lost his nerve in the turn, and hit the brakes.
Nothing else makes sense. He knew the route. No one claimed responsibility for a terrorist act, he wasn’t asleep, and he probably wasn’t texting or on the phone, and a projectile would not have caused an engineer to panic and speed up.
Pure speculation, but that’s my opinion at this point
The dog that did not bark in the night is the fact that at the last second, just before the train hit the curve and jumped, the engineer hit the brakes. So he presumably did not realize he was going that fast. How is that possible? Well, it was night, and the speed-up could have happened gradually, and his instruments could have not indicated any rise in speed. But again, how is that possible?
In a word, in a concept - Stuxnet.
And if so, then he would be disoriented as to what happened, thinking he experienced some sort of stroke or fell a sleep or something he didn’t remember, feeling guilty and hiding behind his lawyer. And the FBI would be giving out contradictory stories trying to figure out which way to spin the idea tha terrorists have infiltrated train software - which of course leads to deep levels within Amtrack and God knows what else.

Looks like all sorts of damage on the same side. What all caused it? Did the rails being snapped free from the ties send gravel, dirt, or even spikes and spike plates flying and ricocheting into the front of the engine?
No, there is no back up rider or engineer in the engine’s cab.
There are maybe 3 main people that run the train other than the dinner car or porters who keep the sleeper cars clean, help people.
There is the conductor who is the boss and who gives orders of the operation of the train.
Then you have a assistant conductor who helps in operation of the train, helps passengers, and helps collect tickets.
Maybe, just maybe you might have a fireman/brakeman who might assit the conductor with operations and ticket collection.
The engineer is alone in the engine’s cabin.
The engineer has a 2 way radio that he is or could be in constant communication with the conductor and the dispatcher.
In the end it’s the conductor’s job of responsibility of the train.
Have we gotten a statement from the conductor of this train ?
That impact could have happened during the derailment, like hitting one of the catenary line poles, or the rocks of the rail bed.
If something came through the windshield the laws of physics prove that if a rock and the force of it would have either pushed him back into his seat, or knocked him off his seat to the side, not forward.
Was there any head injuries of any kind on his face, head, or neck.

Where is the medical report for this engineer ?
This sounds more like a scripted cover up.
His lawyer told him what to say.
This will not hold up under strong scrutiny.

I don’t think that would work due to the “protection” that will continue for the Public Service employees, their benefits, and pensions (like USPS).
Sell it outright to a private company that knows what it is doing might work. Then let the current employees apply for jobs with everyone else. May the best guys/gals win!

So, does that mean the conductor had control of the train, not the engineer? I mean, how can the conductor be responsible if they cannot get to the controls?
I had the immediate thought, after hearing about this “accident”, that it was suicide/homicide like the pilot. I also thought he may have changed his mind too late.
Whoever accelerated is responsible.

The NTSB just came out stating that during communications between the engineer and the dispatcher shows there is NO evidence that the engineer mentioned anything about projectiles hitting the train.
Perhaps his lawyer concocted that story line after hearing about reports of “ other “ trains being hit by projectiles.
Ok. After looking at more pics, it appears that the engine was on it’s side a some point. That would explain the damage to me. I haven’t seen any pics of it on it’s side. Was it uprighted by work crews, or did it unpright itself or was it pushed upright by other cars when coming to a stop?

It wasn’t his lawyer that speculated on the probability of a projectile, it was the assistant conductor that thought that she overheard a conversation between the engineer and conductor of the other train.
And a money pit for the Democrats to dump more and more money in and use it as a excuse to blame republicans when there is a government shut down or cutting the budget, the democrats, never letting a crises go to waste.
Where should the democrats should be blamed for cutting the budget ? National defense ? Nation security ? What else ?
The engineer has the actual physical control of the train, but the conductor has the administrative control and responsibility of the control of the train.
The conductor is like a captain of a ship or plane.
So she must have speculated and concluded that their train also was hit by some projectile.
Hearing about another train being hit by a projectile from communications with this engineer and the conductor of the “ other “ train could have been mixed up or the assistant conductor was confused by the conversation.
The only thing that struck the train was the engineer’s head bouncing off of it when it derailed.
