Keep in mind that Kentucky has it’s own Big Dig with the tunnels for the Louisville East End Bridge.
It’s only taken something like 40 years from conception (and Sally Brown deciding to finally shed her mortal coil) to get to actual construction, there have been cave-ins (big one a few months back shut them down for a while) and are limited to four travel lanes with no reasonable ability to expand them to handle any increased traffic load.
The bridge portion over to Indiana does look like it’ll be purdy tho.
Does that mean that once the tunnel is complete Bertha will be left in place?
Thats what they did with the big Chunnel boring machines. Had them dig their own graves and backfilled behind them with cement. Seemed pretty wasteful to me.
It's only 10 years away...
Could probably hire a bunch of hard-rock underground miners to dig the tunnel with picks, shovels, drills, explosives and timbers in less than 30 days. Throw in some horse-drawn winzes to haul out the dirt and rocks. Pay the miners $100 p/hr plus all the beer and whisky they can drink and you’d still save millions.
Lucky you to have escaped. I spent two days in KY and thought it was heaven.
Yes, the good thing, though, is that it doesn’t impact ME at all. I work downtown Louisville, but hop on I-65 Southbound and it’s smooth sailing all the 80 miles home. ;-)
Never.
Digzilla!
You’re still helping to pay for it ... the Kentucky Transporation Cabinet appreciates your generosity ;-)
80 miles one way. Wow, thats really impressive. Then again it probably takes less time than my 25 mile, hour and a half each way DC commute.
“Todd Trepanier” ?
Isn’t trepanning the surgical procedure of BORING A HOLE IN SOMEONE’S HEAD? There’s some weird kind of synchronicity going on around here.
In ancient times, holes were drilled into a person who was behaving in what was considered an abnormal way to let out what they believed were evil spirits. Evidence of trepanation has been found in prehistoric human remains from Neolithic times onward.

You're < 5 hours away, I might want to bring my FoST down and join you one day, considering I have fam in Louisville. Might even bring some locals from the car club, we are always looking for twisties as we live in flat IL country! Would you mind sending me details on your route?
P.S. As a fellow enthusiast you probably fully imagined my head snap when I saw the word twisties. LOL
Hey, I’m in a 50’s-60’s rock band that has become the “house band” for a local place that uses an old High School basketball gym (frozen in 1960) as it’s dance all. . If you are serious about your buddies, I could work out an event with some local car enthusiasts - complete with live music and awesome local food!
Hey, Ben Carson used to do it all the time...saving the lives of small children (with brain cancer?)...until he retired :-P
I mean, isn’t that the root of modern brain surgery? You need to open up the skull one way or another...
That would make a road out of a rainforest! Calling all Avatars.
No - they’ll drill it out the other side. If they make it that far. I hope that do, but I’m doubtful. I live near Seattle. I’ve driven on I-99 only a few times - gives me the willies. (”Oh please don’t have an earthquake now!”)
“...hire a bunch of hard-rock underground miners to dig the tunnel...”
That’s one of the big problems - its not hard rock. Its a real complicated mess of glacial material. Some hard, some soft. I’m waiting for them to encounter a 15-foot diameter erratic boulder. Although at the moment, the geology is the least of their worries.
It took the city council and other bigwigs so long to decide because they were busy lining up their bribes and kickbacks. Do you know how many millions were spent on alleged “consultants?” Who, surprise surprise, were somehow related by blood and marriage to the counciltwerps?
Sorta like the republicans holding out on TPP (AKA Trashta) before voting for Obama’s anti-working people treaty that gives away a lot of American sovereignty to overseas corporations.
