A friend of ours from Pakistan described how before the oil, the Saudis begged for Hajis in order to make money.
And he supposed that Wahabism’s export of radical Islam is as much a measure to drive more tourism by the pious to Saudi Arabia as a social/PR drive to raise Saudi Arabia’s prominence and political status.
The world-wide mosque building initiative was both an international PR campaign and influence building as well as a pressure relief valve for all the religious studies graduates that they don’t have jobs for at home.
