Sen. Cruz: Trade Promotion Authority Creates a Path for Prosperity

We must engage the global economy to ignite growth and opportunity at home

May 22, 2015 | 202-228-7561

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), today released the following statement regarding legislation to establish trade promotion authority:

"The American middle class is getting crushed by the Obama economy," said Sen. Cruz. "Middle class incomes are stagnating, and the labor force participation rate has not been this low since the Carter Administration. While I have serious concerns about the all-too-typical Washington backroom deals that enabled this bill to get to the floor, I could not in good conscience vote against a bill whose most significant impacts will be jobs, growth, and opportunity for struggling American families.

"By passing Trade Promotion Authority, we create a path for trade agreements to reduce government-created barriers to prosperity. More economic growth will expand opportunity to those working to climb the economic ladder and achieve the American Dream.

"This bill increases the transparency of trade deals considered under its rules. It requires the public posting of the full text of any such agreement for at least 60 days before Congress begins consideration and reaffirms that Congress gets the final say. It would enable both this President and the next to expand trade that benefits American workers.

"This legislation ensures the United States will not be stuck on the sidelines as China aggressively pushes the 19 trade agreements it currently has under construction. It sends a message to the world that the United States will play an active role in writing the rules that will govern international trade this century. The cost to peace and prosperity of doing otherwise is too great to let this opportunity pass."

I guess Ted has to answer to his big money donors too. You’re wrong on this one Ted.

Do I have this right? It's good for the US worker if the US lowers to near-zero tariffs on these countries because Chinese wages are too high?

And because we can trust Obama with more authority.

JMHO....Senator Cruz has been spending too much time with those large donors.

There is no explanation that will satisfactorily explain secret legislation via a via Obamacare.

I happen to agree with you, so I have been thinking, "what possible reason could persuade Senator Cruz to go along with such treachery?"

I can only come up with one possible thought;
'something about undercutting China' in it.

It’s DC as usual.

I thought that Cruz was not usual. However, he’s still my candidate at this point.

Why the alarming secrecy? And, yeah, no one seems to have read the damn thing much less understand it.

I’m very troubled by this.

Why?

He's explained it actually will increase accountability and visibility.

What are you troubled by?

Wow! I have lost all faith in CRUZ..... T

his is worse than the TARP that most in congress now say was a colossal mistake.

Then we had the Obama care debacle, and soon as the Republicans won congress... Said they would leave it there.

Then we had the open borders and say nothing about it. absolutely astounding!

I had left the Republican party, but would still cast many votes for them..... No More!

I will NEVER vote for a single Republican again. They are f*cking Traitors to their supporters. DONE! I’m not falling for the Bull $hit anymore.

The Tea Party is going to have to separate from the Republican party because the GOPe is just keeping them in check.

I bet this too....2016 the Democrats will win the White House.

Why do they act like this is the only trade bill that could pass? Why don’t they scrap it and come up with a non-secret bill that doesn’t give Obama any more power to destroy America?

Exactly. It will only benefit pimps for cheap illegal labor.

And cost more American jobs.

"The American middle class is getting crushed by the Obama economy," said Sen. Cruz."

Another windbag. Where was he during the Bush administration? Perot was the last guy that heard the sucking sound of trade deals where we trade American middle class jobs for trade deficits.

Right we need a real opposition, and not a fake opposition party.

The Republican Party is a fake opposition party.

If it wasn’t this, it was going to be something else. I just knew that this type of support for one guy was going to turn out badly. If folks are turning on Cruz...Walker, Paul have no chance.

The Democrats have nothing to worry about.

The sad thing is it’s not because the Democrat policy is popular...... It’s because the Republicans are a fake opposition party.

At this time Conservatives, even though our ideas are in the majority (based on last election results), have no real party in Washington.

Since he’ll probably be president himself in 20 months, he probably didn’t want to go through this again...
