A Syrian brigadier-general was killed in a blast that targeted his car in downtown Damascus on Sunday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said.
The Britain-based group said "a brigadier general and approximately six people with him were killed in an explosion in the Adawi neighborhood in the center of the capital."
The powerful Ahrar al-Sham rebel group posted a video online claiming to show the attack on Brigadier-General Bassem Ali Muhanna's car with an improvised explosive device, in the early hours of Sunday.
A security source said Muhanna was a member of the Republican Guards, an elite unit of the army.
Elsewhere, jihadists shot down a government helicopter in northern Syria's Aleppo province, according to both the Observatory and supporters of the Islamic State group (ISIS). But state media said the helicopter had suffered technical problems.
The Observatory, which relies on a network of sources on the ground, said ISIS had brought down the helicopter after midnight near the Kweyris air base in the east of Aleppo province. Its director, Rami Abdel Rahman, said at least one crew member had been killed but "the fate of the rest is unknown".
Jihadist accounts on Twitter said ISIS had downed the helicopter using anti-aircraft missiles. They posted the names of three crew members they said had been killed and pictures of a helicopter in flames.
State television said, however, that "a helicopter crashed after takeoff from Kweyris airport in Aleppo province because of technical faults and the crew were killed".

Impossible, we were told that the JV team was teetering on the brink of annihilation. The NY Slimes just said, sit back, relax, have a hit of medical marijuana, the fall of Ramadi is temporary, and Syrian forces are pushing back ISIS on every front.
After have shot, strafed, barrel bombed and mowed down 250,00 Syrians and making over 50 million homeless with millions more of Syrian refugees knocking at Europe’s and America’s door, dictator Bashar al-Assad cannot not even guarantee the security of his goons in his own Damascus stronghold.
Well put.
It’s also interesting that Assad’s forces are reliant on crude, homemade barrel bombs, and have been for some time. Of course, during the 1973 war against Israel, they started with nearly 1400 tanks and wound up with something in excess of 300.
Yep.
War is Peace.
Weakness is Strength.
Defeat is Victory.
Following is Leading.
Cowardice is Bravery.
We had 30 times Assad's military budget and couldn't protect our people in Iraq. Assad's fighting rebels recruiting from a population of 20m Sunni Arabs, actively funded by the wealthy Gulf state governments. We were fighting rebels recruiting from a population of 6m Sunni Arabs, mainly funded from within Iraq. Bottom line is that given his financial and manpower limitations, and the rebels' funding advantage, he's doing an excellent job. The question is whether his adversaries' manpower and material advantages will start to overwhelm even pretty good generalship.
Website of the Syrian Human Rights Observatory. They have a lot of useful info on that conflict.

Anyway, I read that Syrian Human Rights Observatory, they report on both sides, they are located in London and seem pretty fair imho.
They stirred up the hornets nest and it’s been festering since Assad Senior came to power in the ‘70s; they also fostered terrorism, adventures in Lebanon.
And probably had a role in the bombing of the Marine Barracks during Reagan’s term. Should anyone disagree, look it up.
What has happened to all of Assad’s Russian and Iranian support?
thanks BC.
