CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- It's still possible to buy a gleaming Ford truck in Venezuela, rent a chic apartment in Caracas, and snag an American Airlines flight to Miami. Just not in the country's official currency.
As the South American nation spirals into economic chaos, an increasing number of products are not only figuratively out of the reach of average consumers, but literally cannot be purchased in Venezuelan bolivars, which fell into a tailspin on the black market last week.
Businesses and individuals are turning to dollars even as the anti-American rhetoric of the socialist administration grows more strident. It's a shift that's allowing parts of the economy to limp along despite a cash crunch and the world's highest inflation. But it could put some goods further out of reach of the working class, whose well-being has been the focal point of the country's 16-year-old socialist revolution.

Thanks Aquamarine.
After they spent the last piaster they could borrow.
Hmmmm, where have we seen that before? Oh, yes, Eastern Europe, the second half of the 20th century. Communism worked there really well. s/
That's not much different than 2 Obama terms and two HRC terms. And, the end result may be real close.
It was Zimbabwe’s last resort as well. In 2009 the Zim dollar ceased to be anything but monopoly money available on Ebay. There is, of course, a little problem with adopting somebody else’s currency, as Greece is finding out. You don’t run your own monetary policies anymore. No more printing money to fake your way into the illusion of a good economy. The Americans are already doing that.
Are you with me doctor wu?
Are you really just a shadow
Of the man that I once knew?
Are you crazy are you high
Or just an ordinary guy?
(Phil Woods played that great sax solo)
SD made so many GREAT songs and “Katy Lies” is my 2nd fav album.
Interesting story about the recording & mix-down sessions that used double stacked Magnepan speakers. SD were one of the first groups to embrace high-end state-of-the-art equipment.
Huh? We’re they Venezuelan?
Were they—iPad inserted the apostrophe against my will.
How long before EBT cards surface?
Some of them get killed over there almost daily
Caracas is a dangerous place
Here’s a clue, good citizens of Venezuela.
First, burn down the presidential palace - with the president and his commie goons inside.
Second, attack and hang from lampposts the commie bureaucrats who are allowing this.
These commies have two things you can quickly discover to defeat them.
They have:
1) Names.
2) Addresses.
Go to it, Venezuelans. Don’t stop until they’re all dead.
But socialists can always spend money faster than wealth can be created.
One of my favorite songs from one of my favorite bands on one of my favorite albums of theirs.
At one time I had the actual scores of many of their songs.
Love Chuck Rainy on Bass.
SD used the best in the biz.
My understanding is that SD lost the tapes in a fire, and had to essentially re-record Katy Lied from scratch.
“But it could put some goods further out of reach of the working class, whose well-being has been the focal point of the country’s 16-year-old socialist revolution.”
Ironic, huh? You know, how socialism, which is supposedly intended to enrich the poor, but always makes the poor much more poor, yet the ruling elite always become very rich.
“How is it possible that in the face of the U.S. effort to sabotage the revolution, we are allowing transnational companies to conduct business with the imperialist dollar in our country?”
Because that’s what the end is always like in a socialist economy micromanaged by ignorant, corrupt, incompetent, kleptocrats?
The problem was using a dbx noise reduction unit that failed and caused sonic problems with master tapes. IIRC, Roger Nichols was able to help restore the tracks.
A friend of mine is an acclaimed mastering engineer and re-mastered a version of the album for audiophiles on CD - GREAT sounding version. Alas, due to legal problems his re-mastered album never saw commercial release.
As an aside, a local teen (Rick Zehringer on lead guitar) started a group known as the McCoys and had a small hit with “Hang On Sloopy”. He later changed his last name to Derringer and became a highly sought after studio musician who played on “Katy Lied” and many SD albums.
