A man was shot dead at a Detroit gas station late at night on Tuesday.

The man was trying to flee a carjacking while he was filling up with gas.

Video at https://youtu.be/sjzbu_t89E4

Why do blacks commit so many crimes? Is it genetic? I seriously do not understand it.

You can take the man out of the jungle but you cant take the jungle out of the man.

Generational poverty culture (thanks to liberals) is the more likely culprit than genetics.

What about all the groups that have spent centuries in poverty? How do you explain that?

“Why do blacks commit so many crimes?”

Because like everyone else, they know they can. However, their instincts don’t seem to tell them that they shouldn’t. It’s their disregard for the consequences that makes them so ‘special’.

When we lived there, my daughter had to go see a play for one of her college classes. It was at another college in a rough area. No way she was going alone. I took her and had to endure some stupid play about the joys of being gay.

Unghhhhh

He should have quit filling up with gas before fleeing. It would have made it easier to run. Filling up with gas? There are too many bad jokes in that one mis-sentence. It really is too bad that grammar is not taught in public school or required in journalism courses any more.

Most people lived in poverty until the 20th century.

I was in downtown Detroit for business a few times 30 to 35 years ago. I stayed in the tall round hotel (Renaissance Center?). I was warned when I checked in to NOT go outside the building after dark.

So what’s the excuse for the crime in certain Irish and Italian subgroups?

Downtown Detroit is just as safe as any other downtown area in the country.

Unless its late at night and you are the police chief; then you have to be very aware of your surroundings. But seriously, I worked and grew up in a town that still has the highest crime rate in the Northwest. Yet I feel more comfortable there than I do in most other large municipalities. That is because I know where the danger is and is not and how to avoid trouble. So I understand your assessment.

My parents lived in the Detroit area when they were first married and we visited relatives many times there while I was growing up. My uncle sent them a picture of the house where I was conceived recently. It is now located in a blighted area and was for sale for $1000. Sadly, over five decades of Democratic leadership and social programs has ruined much of the area.

Some people can get out of a poverty mindset, but it’s nothing we should excuse off as being easy. My wife came from a poor family, I came from a middle class family. Our most common arguments about finances revolve around spending or saving new money. I want to save it, pay off debts, or invest in retirement. She wants to spend it or give it away to someone else. Trying to break her out of that mindset is very challenging.

On the flipside, I have a friend (African-American) who left New Orleans after Katrina who was also raised in poverty. He got a job here, met his wife here, and has never looked back. Almost like a light switch, he was able to adapt and flourish. Sometimes people get it, but for most, it is a long slow road that requires constant accountability from peers.

Your own words expose your ignorance.

It may sell with people who want to believe your BS but I actually know better.

committing crime is a choice.

genetics doesn’t enter into it.

it’s cultural.

Because like everyone else, they know they can.

Like minded people in groups tend to cede the ability to think on their own to the group. Unfortunately that's when the lowest common denominator is most powerful and its not limited to the left as these Detroit threads so clearly prove.

Maybe it wouldn’t be such a bad thing if civil indifference toward their cause was more prevalent. I have the right to be done with it but I’m not quite done with it just yet. Maybe I’ll live to see things turn around but I think I know better now and that’s kind of a drag. I’m not going to live the rest of my life being overly concerned for the human race.

I have more hope for the decent folks of Detroit than I do for the “conservatives” who clearly don’t want things to get any better.

Its just sad to me how much joy some FReepers take over one shooting in Detroit when the city has been very quiet in the face of Obama desperately trying to stir things up for over a year.

Frankly, I would rather live in Detroit than in Baltimore, Ferguson, and most other large cities in the country. At least in Detroit I have a right to protect myself.
