Over the weekend, Singapore Airlines Flight 836, flying from Singapore to Shanghai, lost power mid-flight on both of its Rolls-Royce engines.
According to Flightradar 24, the Airbus A330-343 experienced the problem while cruising at 39,000 feet.
The incident, which took place just south of Hong Kong, caused the airliner to descend 13,000 feet before the crew was able to restart the engines.
The Airbus jet — registration number 9V-SSF — landed safely in Shanghai an hour and a half later.
There were 182 passengers and 12 crew members on board the airliner. No injuries were reported.
According to The Aviation Herald, Singapore Airlines confirmed that the A330 "experienced a temporary loss of power" after encountering some bad weather.

On the Flyertalk website someone speculated that they lost one engine and the crew tried to restart the wrong engine, causing both to be shut down. I believe this is what caused the crash of the Taiwan airplane that we saw on video narrowly missing a bridge. Pretty scary if true.
I think the 13000 ft dive would be a clue too....

The damage from an EMP is permanent. There would have been no restart.

Fershure....years ago, we were on a flight from Tokyo to Singapore and hit some sort of atmospheric event where the plane just “dropped” for five or six seconds....everyone aboard noted it.
Could be a similar incident to those that purchased
diesel fuel for their cars, and acquired car hiccups.
From flameout at 39000, to regaining powered flight,
might have some ride, but i congratulate the crew.
Which is why I always try and make my air travel on single engine airplanes. With two, you are twice as likely to lose an engine.

Volcanic activity in the region? I remember that happened a few years ago when a plane ingested fine particles from an eruption.
