The Prospects for Polygamy
The New York Times ^ | May 30, 2015 | Ross Douthat

Posted on 05/31/2015 10:31:45 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

ON every issue save abortion, social liberalism is suddenly ascendant in America. The shift on same-sex marriage has captured the headlines, but the change is much more comprehensive: In just 15 years, we have gone from being a society divided roughly evenly between progressive and traditionalist visions to a country where social conservatism is countercultural and clearly in retreat.

This reality is laid bare in the latest Gallup social issues survey, which shows that it’s not only support for same-sex marriage that’s climbing swiftly: so is approval of unwed parenthood (45 percent in 2001, 61 percent now), divorce (59 percent then, 71 percent today), and premarital sex (53 percent then, 68 percent now). Approval of physician-assisted suicide is up seven points and support for research that destroys human embryos for research is up 12, pushing both practices toward supermajority support.

Oh, and one more thing: The acceptance of polygamy has more than doubled.

Now admittedly, that last one is an outlier: Support for plural matrimony rose to 16 percent from 7 percent, a swift rise but still a very low number. Polygamy is bobbing forward in social liberalism’s wake, but it’s a long way from being part of the new permissive consensus....

There are no more moral boundaries in America. Anything goes.

I, for one, welcome my . . . er . . . uh . . multiple divorce suits (all at once), my new STD (which one of them gave THAT to me?) and multiple alimony and child support dollars flowing out every month.

Business idea: Polygamous matchmaking and “bride shopping” guided travel assistance. LOL

I can imagine where the logic is going. You have "Susie has two mommies" and the social engineers will decide that a child needs both a mommy and a daddy, but having two mommies or two daddies is now okay.

The next leap logically, to meet both dictates is "Susie has two mommies and one daddy" or "Susie has two daddies and one mommie".

It's Alice and Wonderland logic. Start with an insane premise and you come to insane conclusions.

Nonsense.

If every one of these liberal pathologies, like same-sex marriage and abortion, were removed from the dictatorial Federal Courts, and the American people were allowed their constitutional right to vote on the issues, they would all be defeated!

These polls are designed as a propaganda effort to change the culture.

There’s a reason many divorce lawyers liked the idea of “gay” marriage.

Sure, let’s have each ruthless billionaire hedge fund trader marry a dozen disagreeable feminists! Sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander.

The story isn't the ascendancy of gay marriage or now polygamy. The story is that heterosexuals turned their backs on marriage. We accepted divorce. This is what we got.

Good article, if a depressing one. And I think Douthat nails it on polygamy. As traditional institutions are weakened and redefined, it makes it easier for each successive “expansion” to succeed.

If the law acknowledges marriage between two men or two women (as I think will happen in next month’s SCOTUS ruling), then it isn’t that much of a stretch to argue that a man and two women could also some day be recognized. History has a lot more basis for that kind of arrangement than gay marriage, to boot.

I give it no more than five years and polygamy will be legal in at least some states based on the ruling of an unelected federal judge

But “ruthless billionaire hedge fund traders” tend to marry beauty pageant winners, professional cheerleaders, actresses and models. Not ugly, disagreeable feminists.

After Laurence V. Texas struck down the sodomy law in Texas and, by extension, invalidated sodomy laws in 13 other states....

{Justice Antonin} Scalia wrote that if the court was not prepared to validate laws based on moral choices as it had done in Bowers, state laws against bigamy, same-sex marriage, adult incest, prostitution, masturbation, adultery, fornication, bestiality, and obscenity would not prove sustainable.

He said that 12 years ago, a brilliant legal mind and futurist if there ever was one.

If the Supreme Court (i.e., Justice Anthony “I am the Constitution” Kennedy) rules in favor of SSM, the Traditional Mormons will be racing to the courthouse to claim that polygamy is likewise Constitutionally protected. If consent is all that matters regarding a couple getting married, why does it have to be a couple? Why not a group?

This all had to come with the support of same-sex “marriage” - because it isn’t actually support of same-sex “marriage”, it’s that these same people don’t really care about the concept of marriage at all - hence what the purpose of marriage is has become irrelevant in their minds.

Keep telling yourself that if it makes you happy.

I had similar discussions five years ago. People claimed that gay marriage was rejected every time it came up for a vote, which was true.

I pointed out that polls indicated this was changing, and the response was exactly what you said. The polls are wrong.

Then five states, I believe, came up for a vote on gay marriage in 2012. It passed in all.

You may not like to recognize that America is changing around us, and for that matter neither do I.

But closing our eyes and chanting that it isn’t true won’t change that.

When you’re in the process of suffering a comprehensive defeat, the only reasonable response is to recognize it, fall back, regroup, figure out what the hell went wrong and counterattack. The first step being to recognize that you’re being defeated.

We did accept divorce. But first we accepted contraception and the idea that sex was primarily for pleasure. When sex was also for children, men were more respectful of women and their burdens that childbearing entailed. Now, for many men women are just for pleasure, and if they should avoid pregnacies, contraception and abortion are out there. But if women can’t or won’t make themselves readily available for sex because contraception and abortion are harmful for them, it is sayonara chick.

“There’s a reason many divorce lawyers liked the idea of “gay” marriage.”

Can you imagine, just a few years from now, a TV show called “Gay Divorce Court” - think of the weird stories and drama.
