458 passengers aboard a chartered cruise ship

Nothing about how large the ship was. That's a large group.

Tragic. However its just a matter of time before one of those top heavy multilayered cruise ships capsizes in open ocean during a freak storm.

seems like there are more options on a river during a storm than, say, the open ocean. Or one of the Great Lakes.

Wow, you would think with a state controlled everything they would have the best safety standards of any country, that they would have all the safety equipment and do some sorta safety drill at every port to make sure they are prepared in case something bad happens.

I’m a little confused here. How does a cruise ship sink while navigating the “storm-immune” Yangzee river with huge hull and a choppy depth of 30 feet?

(Don’t answer, it’s a rhetorical question).

Pretty big diversity in size and seaworthiness of those Chinese cruise ship. Other than that, I would not want to be in a tight section of that river when a wall of water comes plunging past in a heavy rain storm. Could sweep you away. I don’t know if the ship sinking was from poor visibility or fast water but I can see it happening.

What a beautiful cruise though. That scenery is just flat gorgeous.

What a wonderful world God gave us. If only I had time and money to see it all — especially money.

I see the Chinese are continuing the Soviet standards for health and safety.

I’m sorry, but this is a cruise boat ON A RIVER, and the Chinese still manage to sink it and kill maybe over 400 people?

Hate to sound callous, but do these people not know how to swim? Fewer than a dozen out of 458 folks on board were rescued?

If I were on board and the ship began to sink, I’d be looking for an Ice chest, seat cushion...something.

It’s almost as if the majority of the people were packed inside this thing with lil way of escape or the river was raging. Something sounds off about the story.

It was 9:28 p.m. and stormy outside. Not hard to get trapped when you are inside and the ship rolls. Especially for older folks. Damned shame.

The Yangtse Song
by Monty Python

We love the Yangtse, Yangtse Kiang,
Flowing from Yushu down Ching Kiang,
Passing through Chung King, Wuhan and Hoo Kow

We love the Yangtse, Yangtse Kiang,
Flowing from Yushu down Ching Kiang,
Passing through Chung King, Wuhan and Hoo Kow

Three thousand miles, but it gets there somehow.
Oh! Szechuan’s the province and Shanghai is the port,
And the Yangtse is the river that we all support.

[clapping]
Yangtse!
