SOON AFTER the rioting in Baltimore ended in late April, the worlds media turned their gaze elsewhere. Then, as a petulant police force retreated to its station houses, the real carnage began.
May was the most lethal month in the city in more than 40 years; in per capita terms, it may have been the bloodiest month since recordkeeping began.
There were 43 victims of homicide in the city last month, the most since August 1972, when Baltimore s population, now 600,000, was about 900,000. In addition, there were 108 nonfatal shootings in May, nearly triple the number recorded the same month last year. Over the three-day Memorial Day weekend alone, the city recorded 32 shootings and nine homicides.
As Baltimores streets succumb to the wave of carnage, the police have simply withdrawn, by many accounts. Harassed, hooted at and openly hated in the wake of the arrest of Freddie Gray, whose death in custody triggered the rioting in April, uniformed officers seem to have decided not to do their jobs....

What a pathetic editorial.
“Baltimore must not be allowed to spiral into further despair and violence. Just as the city deserves responsible, proactive policing, it deserves strategic, forward-thinking governance from city and state leaders. Failing that, Baltimores failure will become their own.”
You’ll never get “strategic, forward thinking governance” from a democrat controlled city. Fifty years of prog rule begets Mad Max. What did they expect?
I AM impressed they didn’t call for confiscation of guns from legal owners.
When they call 911 for help, the system should redirect the calls to Blackwater.
There are legal gun owners in Baltimore?
Or Papa John’s pizza.
Maybe two or three, but they are obviously responsible for the carnage, right? If only they’d register those guns, all would be well.
It’s Baltimore which ha s been boiling for years and as far as I’m concerned it’s getting exactly what any liberal run city will eventually become... New York is getting much worse under deB lasio as well.
Liberals, democrats etc treat blacks the same as they do the Native Americans and cities are nothing more than black reservations. Give them just enough to break any incentive to work or get ahead and still vote for the hadouts.
This isn’t about “peevishness” or “petulance” as the Post says. It’s about trumped up Murder2 charges and risk of serious personal injury. It’s about mobs surrounding police when they do make arrests. It’s about a female african american DA, in way over her head, declaring this is our time to a bunch of thugs, gang members, looters and rioters. This is about a Mayor that gave the finger to the Police and brought in odorific Al Sharpton to be her top advisor. The editorial should have said this is what happens when incompetent, pandering leadership fails and is rotten to the core. Baltimore is over. The folks there should move to DC and whine about the police and burn that City down too. Maybe then the lefties at the Post will begin to understand that “ye reap what ye sew”.
Of course the WaPo cocktail sippers are blaming not only the cops for teaching Baltimore a harsh lesson, but also white GOP governor Hogan, with nary a mention of the city’s incompetent black mayor and circus ring prosecutor.
“as a petulant police force retreated “
There ya go, 42 murders are the fault of the police.
43 actually.
None dare call them THUGS.
"Decided"? Most people who go to work expect to be paid for doing their day's work, not to be brought before a kangaroo court. Baltimore decided not to let them do their jobs. (And apparently has no "Plan B".)
“None dare call them THUGS.”
The history of thugs (thugee’s) is very interesting. They were a criminal gang that would join travelers in India, gain there confidence and then strangle them. The governor of India decided to wipe them out. So after 600 years they came to an end. Today we’d have to empathize with them and give them space to do their thing. My, how humanity has changed in just a short time. As recently as the Korean war it was okay to kill somebody who wanted to kill you. Now we take them prisoner and heal their wounds before letting them lose to kill again. Is there such a thing as being too civilized?
Being stupid isn't more civilized than being smart.
We are not too civilized. We are too stupid.
” a petulant police force”?
this is the kind of crap i expect from a rag like the washington post.
So when a madman gets into the post and starts killing who ya gonna call?
a petulant police force, or some of your lib buds there dumbasses?
The editors say that Baltimore deserves high quality policing and government. What have Baltimoreans done to earn these things they supposedly deserve?
They elect incompetent morons and riot whenever demagogues tell them to.
They are enjoying the direct consequences of their choices.
“.......there were 108 nonfatal shootings in May, nearly triple the number recorded the same month last year”...
Sounds like the street rats need more range time.
Or the local funeral parlor.
The "we" in question has become so "open minded" that their/"our" brains have fallen out.
(The "we" refers to progressive liberals in general, and to the members of the editorial board of the Washington Post specifically. The Baltimore mayor, state's attorney, police commissioner, much of the police force and most of the murder victims are African American and Democrats. Why didn't the Post just claim that it's all "Bush's fault"?)
