We already knew the rent was too damn high, even before we published a report this February showing not only that the median for a one bedroom apartment in the city had jumped to $3,460, but that even formerly cheaper neighborhoods were now among the pricey.
Apparently though, they werent high enough. According to Zillow, the new median rent in San Francisco is $4,225 a month. Zillows data compose the Zillow Rental Index (ZRI). This index shows rents up 16% year-over-year (YOY) this April, and take into account all types of rentals in San Francisco proper, from single family homes to condos to in-laws.

When Elon Musk first moved to Silicon Valley, he lived in his office.
Where’s “rent too Damn high” guy when you need him?
That's a good thing for both of us. BTW it's ANYWAY, not anyways. Go look it up in your Funk and Wagnels!
Most gay people don’t have kids, which means they have a whole lot more disposable income than heterosexuals.
Yeah, him too. Sometime when we both have a ton of time, I’ll tell you about a friend who has a 5 unit appt house on Telegraph Hill. You won’t believe what he had to go through to have a place in his own building. It took ten years to get the top floor appt.( had to work his way up, due to SF’s arcane housing laws, and this guy is a lawyer).
“Lousy, damp weather, homosexuals and liberals galore. I wouldnt live in San Fran were I paid a $4,225 housing supplement.”
Maybe so but the young folks who work for Apple, Google, Facebook, etc., are clamoring to live in The City. It is they who have driven rents out of sight and driven off a ton of minorities who used to live where their new digs are located. These Silicon Valley companies have Class A busses that pick up their employees in SF, give them a first-class breakfast on-board where they have complete electronic connectivity and deliver them to their Peninsula offices, then return them after work with cocktails and snacks. And every time you go on-line, you are, in some small way paying for it. SF, like it or not, is a seller’s market and despite your pejorative adjectives, SF isn’t a Chicago or Baltimore, and thanks to the businesses there isn’t likely to ever emulate either of them.
I’m surprised the guy from Little Rock didn’t chime in yet to point out that you can rent some ratty shack in Arkansas for one tenth the price.
Well I don’t want to live in Little Rock so take that Little Rock man.
“Well I dont want to live in Little Rock so take that Little Rock man.”
No kidding! You can see all you need to see of Little Rock in less than a day, that is if you can stand the stench that rolls across the city from Billy Jeff’s “Library.”
Given a fulltime work schedule, 2088 hours per year, SF needs to have at least $24.28 per hour minimum wage *just to cover rent*. /s Thanks Oldeconomybuyer.
A former co-worker of mine who is very liberal moved to San Francisco in 2013. He cannot afford the rent so he lives with 2 roommates and gets to park his car on the street.
Meanwhile outside of any city you can buy a home for about 1/4 that rent.
One of my daughters works at a company down the peninsula in Silicon Valley. She tells me that some of her co-workers rent residences in San Francisco because it's cheaper! As high as SF is to rent, it's pretty steep where the tech firms are located south of SF.
The effects of local zoning, permitting and licensing laws on American liberty. Let them build.
You will not get a job offer in SF unless you have an SF address on your resume.
