HONOLULU – State Insurance Commissioner Gordon Ito today issued the following statement regarding HMSA’s request filed with the Insurance Division to raise premiums for individual Affordable Care Act (ACA) health plans for 2016:

“This is the highest premium increase ever requested by HMSA. The requested increase for an average of 49.1 percent for the ACA individual plan will be closely scrutinized.

“The Insurance Division will actively seek reductions to the proposed request, where possible, to ensure fairness to all parties involved.

“If medical expenditures paid out for healthcare services under the ACA individual plan are too high, the division’s ability to drastically reduce this requested increase will be limited.”

Sorry, I had to abbreviate the title because of length. Full title is:

“DCCA NEWS RELEASE: State Insurance Commissioner’s Statement on HMSA’s Request to Raise Premiums for Individual ACA Health Plans almost 50 percent”

I was trying to make this clearer on my initial post, but hit the post button before complete. Moderator, I apologize if I broke a rule.

Gee didn’t Obozo promise us a $2500 annual savings with lower premiums? How quick we forget his lies.

Wasn’t Hawaii the poster state for state sponsored socialized medicine? Looks like they are running out of other peoples’ money.

When you HAVE, by law, to have an item the ones with that item can charge anything they want.

Did ANYONE, with 1/2 a brain cell NOT see this coming?

Most of my ultra liberal friends are having fits over the Hawaii and New Mexico nearly 50% increased, the Illinois 20-30% increase, and most states 10% to 15% increased.

The Democratic talking point seems to be that this is all artificial for two reasons. (1) the Insurance companies are incompetent and low-balled the initial year's insurance price, so this is just catch-up and rates will go down in the future, (2) The health care system is broken and it doesn't matter what kind of system is out there all costs are out of control so don't blame this industry wide problem on the ACA.

When I point out problems with those lines of argument, they get livid.

It should be interesting to see if the MSM really starts to pick this up and what common voters start to say. It would be hard to blame this on Republicans, but I am now starting to see a lot of Dem's saying hey this was the Romney Republican program, (even though the Mass. law was passed by democrats), Romney signed it vetoing 8 section and the democratic controlled legislature overrode him on 6 sections he had vetoed.

Hey, I wonder if the insurance companies have to pay the feds part of the premium in addition to regular income taxes, corporate taxes etc.

Could this just be a back door tax?

Sad thing is Hawaii is a 100% dem state and they will continue to vote 100% dem. the media and liberals over the next few months will convince the people this increase is the republicans fault for not working with obama to improve and lower health care cost.

Oddly, here in Alaska, the rate increase requested was a mere **48%**

Seems that just 1% of the insured are **40%** of the cost - all due to that tiny faction of the base....

And nobody saw this coming??

The insurance companies have already warned that there are going to be hefty rate increased being requested because of the new administrative fees they have to pay to the feds for admin of Obamacare (and hidden shifting of costs from takers to makers).

As I understand it, health insurance premiums are already up about 22%. (Hanity today.). Add in deductibles so large that virtually no one will ever meet them, and health insurance stocks are up. So how could they possibably need more money? IMHO they are rotten, evil, scammers. Just like their govment buddies.

I am sure that Nancy P, Harry R, and the Big Zero never saw that coming! Oh, I guess it was pointed out, but they just didn't want to listen.
