Not the military I served in! Back then, each year you were called for an assembly and read the riot act on homosexuality, then you had to sign a paper that you had been read the act.
In basic we served KP for the out processing homo barracks. We were told to serve the food. No laughing, no giggling, no pointing at the things we would see.
And we saw plenty.
In the first president’s papers at the Library of Congress is a series of orders with the title, “Head Quarters, V. Forge, Saturday, March 14, 1778.” It includes the following entry,
“At a General Court Martial whereof Colo. Tupper was President (10th March 1778) Lieutt. [Frederick Gotthold] Enslin of Colo. Malcom’s Regiment tried for attempting to commit sodomy, with John Monhort a soldier; Secondly, For Perjury in swearing to false Accounts, found guilty of the charges exhibited against him, being breaches of 5th. Can someone explain what there is to be “proud” of in one man buggering another? I’m heterosexual, and, while I’ve been pretty happy about that arrangement, I can’t say I’m particularly PROUD of it any more than I’m proud of having five fingers on each hand.
