How the GOP went ‘Psycho,’ and how to fix it
reuters.com ^ | 6/5/15 | Craig Shirley

It is hard to describe just how bad things are for the Republican Party. Each day it looks more and more like the Bates Motel from Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film Psycho.

More precisely, the GOP is actually most like the central character who owns the motel: Norman Bates and his alter ego, “Mother,” a.k.a. Norma. Norman appears to be a polite, sincere young man, if strongly dominated by Mother. But so what if he’s idiosyncratic, even eccentric, with a mother fixation? As a private individual, he has the right to be odd.

Mother, meanwhile, wants absolute control over her son. She prefers the status quo — just like the GOP establishment. Consider the senior GOP leadership’s embrace of the National Security Agency’s enveloping surveillance activities. Mother is always spying on Norman. And Norman, when in the grip of his alter-ego, spies on private citizens.

The real Norman is akin to the Tea Party. As played by Tony Perkins, Norman is peaceful, an individualist if a bit naïve. He just wants to be left alone.

Norman is not a killer. It is Mother who is the killer. She is particularly out to get those who bring new ideas and individuality to the Republican Party.

The GOP’s corrupt, corporatist Washington insiders are now playing the role of Mother — lacking principles and remorse, interested only in power and control. She just can’t leave Norman alone. Mother gets upset when Norman tries different experiences or meets different people. Mother is a control freak.

Moreover, strong GOP candidates check in at the Bates Motel, only to disappear.

Read the article. It’s not what you think.

Sometimes the most insightful are those with no dog to hunt. I have heard James Carville, for example, give some very perceptive analyses of republican party politics. Personally, I think there is so much wrong with “our” party as you call it — although these days I do not regard it so, that any insight any party has to offer should be considered, picked part, any comment not of value discarded, and then take heed of germ of truth that my be present, perhaps previously unconsidered and unthought of, because we have a huge problem on our hands if we are to rescue this party from the corrupt establishment and return it back into the hands of the people, and any insight or idea that articulates the problem, might help us gain understanding, and might help us accomplish this gargantuan, perhaps impossible, task. (That being said, I think the GOP is hopeless, and the only hope for our country is a strong third party of the people, for the people, and by the people, under the authority of our King who is Almighty God.)

Can you summarize the ‘how to fix it’ part?

The only way I believe it can be ‘fixed’ is by the States asserting my tagline.

Sorry, but when a writer compares Tea Party politicians to a fictional psychopathic killer with "mommy" issues you lose me when you call his article "pretty good". At least there are people in the Republican Party who believe in the Constitution, Capitalism, and limited government actively struggling against their weak kneed so called party leadership.

And if controlling both houses of Congress and the vast majority of governorships and State legislatures is "bad shape" how should one define the Democrats' condition? Their electoral bastions are the cities, which are descending at an increasing rate into anarchy. Their foot soldiers are a pairing of the semi-illiterate product of those cities' failing schools and a self hating mob of self righteous perverts.

Open debate and fighting within a political party over fundamental ideas and philosophy is not a sign of weakness. The Democrats rely on lock step belief and enforced acquiescence in the bankrupt philosophies of class envy, race hatred, Caucasian communal guilt, luddite environmentalism, and the latest musings of room temperature IQ celebrities.

And when push comes to shove, as it will, we have two ace cards. Firearms and fecundity.

“Can you summarize the ‘how to fix it’ part?”

Actually the article didn’t suggest how to fix it. Maybe because the only way to fix it is to get as many establishemnt people out of power as possible.

Its a political hit piece aimed at low info millenials.

LOL.

Millenials have no idea about the movie Psycho. It’s definitely not aimed at them.

Many republicans should be DE-progammed...

How does Boehner and McConnell gain the leadership...
AND THEN... be RE-ELECTED...

I’m thinking the Charlie Manson group of weirdos?.. or Stockholm Syndrome?.... Pavlov’s Dog’s?.. Brain Wash?..

That being said, I think the GOP is hopeless, and the only hope for our country is a strong third party of the people,

Nothing could save Roman civilization, and I think we are going the same route. At this point, I don't think we can be saved, the finances (wrecked by Democrats and Establishment Republicans) are just too badly damaged.

I think we will see some sort of upheaval. We should just look to keeping ourselves and our families as far away from the misery as possible, but I don't see us saving the whole country. The math just doesn't look right.

Perhaps when it is over, we might pick up the pieces, but I don't see much hope beyond that.

Bullseye.

Nothing is funnier than listening to a Democrat lecture Republicans on what they need to do to win an election.

Not only do I not want to hear any advice from Democrats, but what I find completely unfunny is when our side gives them advice. I can't remember how many times i've heard people on our side trying to talk the Democrats out of some moonbat crazy idea they've got, all to see the Democrats realize it and avoid the trap they were setting for themselves. (Happened a lot during the Clinton Administration.)

Our side should just shut up and let Democrats push their crazy. Giving them good advice is just wrong, and ultimately bad for the country.

Agreed. When it comes to Progressives I say, let them do what they want! It’s the only way the unwashed masses will ever realize just how batsh*t crazy these freaks are.

Do you not watch TV? Norman Bates is the star of a current TV show. Don’t you think they can make the link?

<><><<

You should do a little reading on the viewership of the show.

The 2nd season opener had 3.1 million total viewers, of whom 1.6 million were in the 18-49 age range, millenials top out at 35 years old currently, so number of millenials is likely under a million watching the show. There are approximately 80 million millenials in the US (depending on which website you check). The third season averaged under that.

So no, I don’t think they are making the connection, because they are simply not watching the show.

I watch the show, btw. I’m a boomer.
