Turkey’s Ruling Party Loses Parliamentary Majority

ISTANBUL — Turkish voters delivered a rebuke on Sunday to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as his party lost its majority in Parliament in a historic election that dealt a blow to his ambition to rewrite Turkey’s Constitution and increase his power.

The election results represented a significant setback to Mr. Erdogan, an Islamist who has steadily increased his power as president, a partly but not solely ceremonial post. After more than a decade as prime minister, Mr. Erdogan has pushed for more control of the judiciary and cracked down on any form of criticism, including prosecutions of those who insult him on social media, but his efforts appeared to have run aground on Sunday.

The election was also a significant victory to the cadre of Kurds, liberals and secular Turks who found their voice of opposition to Mr. Erdogan during sweeping antigovernment protests two years ago. . .

Great news! Am I right that Turkey has been essentially the only sane Muslim country in recent years?

Yes, women have been able to vote in Turkey since the 30’s.

Erdogan will not be removed without a coup nor will he accept any diminution of his power or slackening of its accretion.

Yes. Mustafa Kemal designed the modern state to be as much like Europe and America as he could. He was pretty ruthless about it, and some strains still exist in the nation. Turkey still has a relatively large middle class that will not go willingly into Islamic hell.

Hitler didn’t let the election setback in 1932 stop him.

Erdogan is Sunni and covets the Caliphate. Turkey under Erdogan will move to co-opt the ISIS caliphate once it is firmly planted. Iran is an enemy. Turkey cannot attack Iran at this point but is probably aiding ISIS and other Sunni jihadists to strengthen them in the competition for Empire.

I would like to think that the Army, while decapitated in the continuing purge- like the military purge ongoing in the USA- still has a loyal (loyal to Ataturk’s conception of the Turkish State) layer of competent junior officers.

Exactly. Erdogan supported the rise of ISIS, froze out Israel, quashed the independent judiciary, empowered the imams, etc.

That the Turks themselves voted him out is outstanding.

I like the prospects for Turkey now.

My reaction exactly. Turkey needs to repudiate their Islamists, who are headed up by Erdogan. This is one repudiation, but many more are needed.

Indeed, that administration moved Turkey from the camp of reasonable players to fanatical Islamists. It was Turkey that took part in and conspired to send arms into Palestine in the guise of aid.
