I just read the book, Men on Strike, and found it a fascinating look into the trend of men Going Galt in modern society, for similar reasons as your friend.
That is the reason for the non-stop barrage trying to shame young men into marriage (or at least fatherhood); TV thinks they are going to shame these young men into risking everything because TV told them to. Many young people today are from broken homes; they know what is in store for them when the wife/baby-mama gets bored or meets someone with more money...
It is a shame to watch our birthrate drop to near 0, but understandable.
