New York police commissioner William Bratton said he'd like to hire more non-white officers but most of them have criminal records and therefore, he can't, The Guardian reported.
“We have a significant population gap among African American males because so many of them have spent time in jail and, as such, we can’t hire them," Bratton said in an interview with the publication.
For this high number, Bratton blamed the "unfortunate consequences" of stop-and-frisk policing carried out on young non-white men over the last few years in New York.
A felony conviction, domestic violence charges, or a dishonorable discharge from the military automatically disqualifies someone from joining the NYPD, according to the Guardian.

Obama will issue an order....and have all their records expunged.
Maybe NYPD can get members of the New Black Panther Party to contract for services as a sort of police auxiliary, thus bypassing this distressing requirement that the regular police force may not include criminal types.
And hey, think of the outreach they could provide in the lesser-served parts of the city.

A black male friend was helping me with a project at his house one Saturday. There was a steady stream of pretty young black women coming by to proposition him. One woman came by with her daughter and offered a twofer. I said I’d be happy to leave but he ran them off. I said, “You’re not bad looking but this is ridiculous.” He said,(approximately) “I mostly don’t answer the door. You have no idea what a rare commodity I am. I’m employed. I own my own house and cars. I’ve never been arrested or imprisoned.” So I asked why he wasn’t married to one of these women. He got very bitter, saying(approximately) “Most of them want to get married, pregnant and divorced so they can get payments from me and the government. I’m not going to marry a woman who is just looking for an easy ride for the rest of her life.”
They can police the big cities because in Mexico, criminals are considered guilty until proven innocent; so, the cops can't get in trouble any more.
Everyone a Mexican cop arrests is already guilty for now, so everything the cop does to put them in jail is okay!
Good plan.

A most sobering story.
I just read the book, Men on Strike, and found it a fascinating look into the trend of men Going Galt in modern society, for similar reasons as your friend.

Years ago, DC was hiring minority cops with FELONY records.
All was fine, until someone remembered that, as felons, they can’t legally posses firearms... like that Glock on their hip!
Of course, no one lost job. Law was/is ignored!
Mind. Blown.

Worse, experience shows that when standards against hiring criminals as police are relaxed, the results are dismal, with higher rates of police misconduct and abuse of the public by those so hired. Commonly, these harms are perpetrated against those who tend to have more contact with the police — meaning against minorities.
Or, at least, safer jobs.

Agreed. Standards will be lowered to the lowest common denominator. Politicians and their cronies will get rich. Citizens will suffer. And NYC will continue is slide farther down the toilet bowl.
An African immigrant friend of mine made the unfortunate mistake of marrying a black American. A couple of kids, terrible marriage, then divorce. After that experience, he went back to the “old country” to get a wife (took him about a week), brought her here, and has been happy since. Not to beat up on black women, but that’s what this article is about.
My case wasn’t much different...I skipped the “lesson learning” part about marrying a white American, and instead married an immigrant from halfway around the world. Where she comes from divorce is still looked at with shame, not as a badge of honor. Needless to say that one high-stakes game in my life has not been a problem for me.
