Navy ship christened for Giffords, wounded in 2011 shooting

MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle "Gabby" Giffords of Arizona had a Navy vessel named in her honor during a ceremony at a Mobile, Alabama, shipyard Saturday afternoon.

Giffords joined others including Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, as the USS Gabrielle Giffords was christened in coastal Alabama. The 419-foot ship was built at the Austal shipyard and is the Navy's 10th littoral combat ship designed to operate in shallow waters near the coast.

Giffords was badly wounded in a 2011 shooting that left six dead and 13 injured in Tucson. The Democrat left Congress and later founded an organization that supports gun control.

"In congress I was proud to support our armed forces. I love the Navy - I even married a sailor," Giffords said as she kissed her husband Mark Kelly, a retired Navy captain and astronaut who stood by as she addressed the crowd. "Thank you to all who built this ship. She's stealthy; she will defend freedom around the world."

These little crappy ships are dock queens because they are so unreliable. They can’t carry enough fuel to feed the huge turbines in its belly. They have to steam at half speed on any long voyages because of the fuel hog engines.

Why not honor those who died that day?

It is USNS Medgar Evers, not USS Medgar Evers. She is not a commissioned ship of the United States Navy. Evers is operated by the Military Sealift Command.

No such ship in the Navy registry. There is however a USNS Caesar Chavez operated by the Military Sealift Command.

I’m in her district. Let’s just say she had NO interest in the people in her district. She was Pelosi’s Mini-Me. Running for reelection, she boasted of the VFW endorsing her. In point of fact, its PAC did until the rest of the VFW forced the PAC to back down. She forgot to mention that on her signs.

A nut job shot her. He might have shot someone on the city council if she hadn’t turned up. Or most anyone else. He hated GWB. He also hated religion. The nut killed 6 people and wounded 13. Gabby was one of the 13 wounded.

They should have named a rowboat after her.

Yeah, she is a real "dingy." B-P I think we've jumped the shark when we name ships after gun grabbers. What's next, the aircraft carrier, USS Nikita Khruschev?

MOBILE, Ala. — Seeking to honor a retired congresswoman and 2011 shooting victim in the most considerate and respectful way possible, the Navy today christened the future USS Gabrielle Giffords (LCS-10), a first-of-its-kind, gun-free warship.

I love Duffleblog ...

Anybody here been on one of these "Littoral Combat ships"?

They're a death trap. Steel hull from the waterline down. Aluminum topside. Sacrifices safety for speed. Any large caliber weapon will punch thru like shooting a Coke can...

I read your posts and respect your opinions, but I could not disagree more strongly with you than I currently do.

First, she should never have had a ship named after her. Never. It is a slap in the face of every person who has honorably served their country. I would rather have seen the ship named after a random sailor serving a long deployment, since I think that sailor has done more for his country than she ever did.

What has she done? Voted for a bill to fund military equipment? Once?

Worked towards “immigration reform” as the Democrats of today see it? In that case, she is/was a political hack who is working towards the destruction of this country.

As a person, I don’t know her, and that isn’t my concern. I am sorry she was hurt by some liberal Nietzsche worshiping liberal whack-job, I really am, I don’t wish ill fortune on her physically. She was an elected official, that is the best thing any average citizen could say about her.

And they name a ship after her.

One might say it is only the naming of a ship. And so it is.

But the meaning behind all of this, the craven, politicizing by scumbags who are the Democratic party of today of which she was a member, who wouldn’t want to “let a crisis go to waste”, and the repellent thing is, she is right on board being used as an object in this fashion by these wretched excuses for American citizens, never mind human beings in general.

Does it have guns? If so, she probably doesn’t approve.

I don’t think the little marionette even knows what is happening 90% of the time. It is her disgusting husband who tells her what to do and say.

So with all the brave men and women that have donned our military uniforms and paid the ultimate price for defending freedom and liberty we have to go to Giffords for a ship name. Shame on you Navy...........

For the last 30 years, the Navy has assumed that there will be no combat damage. Even submarines aren’t built for damage control anymore. Its a pretty good assumption...until some ragheads in a speedboat pull alongside or someone gets too close with an Exocet or China decides that it wants to rule the oceans one day.

The Navy used to plan for the worst. Now they hope for the best so they can spend the money on “Gay Awareness and Sensitivity Training” for all hands.
