Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti on Saturday signed a law hiking the citys minimum wage from $9 an hour to $15 by 2020, an increase that will affect hundreds of thousands of workers.
Garcetti, speaking in English and Spanish, told a crowd of hundreds at the signing event that he wanted to lift the citys lowest-paid workers out of poverty.
"Too many Angelenos have been left behind even as weve put the recession in the rearview mirror," he told union representatives, immigration and activists at the ceremony.
The Los Angeles City Council approved the wage hike in May with a 14-1 vote. The law requires businesses with 25 or more employees to increase pay for minimum wage workers to $15 by 2020.
The pay hikes start in July 2016 with a jump to $10.50. Smaller businesses will have an extra year to meet the new minimums.

I expect small business to flee out of California over the next decade.
Hello to the Robots that will replace people.
At least customer service will improve.
Did Unions manage to get excluded?
Good news for lower-minimum cities near LA — for now.
Just wait ‘til the Leftist-lature and Moonbeam make it statewide, though.
Nah, what will happen is politicians will be selling exclusions to the highest bidder.
Prediction; the fast food industry will b doing away with many minimum wage jobs and the replacement will be robots. The technology is there.
Where is the compassion of liberals? Why only $15? Why not $150? Why not $1500? Why not $1500000000000000000000?
After all, if you are making demands of other peoples’ money, why not?
Adjusted for inflation $10.50 puts minimum wage where it was in 1965. $15.00 is too high but that is 4 years off, maybe they will come to their senses.
Have the unions asked for their exemption yet?
“Did Unions manage to get excluded?”
Actually this is a gift to the unions. Doesn’t matter how many people are forced out of the job force due to this. The unions get a higher baseline now.
That’s all the increase in the minimum wage is, a gift to unions and the lucky few who manage to keep a job at 15 bucks an hour.
Will people really be happy with a $15 minimum wage if they can’t get hired at that wage? Which all comes back to, what job skills do you have, and what are your skills worth to an employer? If you have no skills, and are only able to do the most basic tasks, but such tasks are not worth $15 an hour to a business owner, he/she will simply not hire anyone to do such tasks.
By 2020? That’s really kicking the can down the road.
They want to make it appear they’ve done something but in reality, they haven’t done a thing. They’ve got to satisfy their ignorant supporters.
Inflation should have kicked in good by then so $15 an hour may be less than they’re actually earning now. If they really mean it, they should make it $15 hour (adjusted for inflation).
Careful, there. You're getting awfully close to being microaggressive.
The IDIOT liberals will blame Republicans and conservatives for the jobs, and high wage earners that create jobs, will continue to leave Taxifornia. Then I wonder who will pay the tens of billions each year to pay for ILLEGAL aliens in Taxifornia??? Oh, then just raise MORE TAXES!!!
Good thinking liberals....
In other words, Garcetti signed a “law” which confiscates money from the owners of businesses and forcibly gives it to their employees.
How is this even legal?
Pretty much any minimum wage is too much and will be responsible for some unemployment.
This is in effect a study of the effects of the "law of unintended consequences"! (More unemployed low-skilled workers with lots of free time on their hands. What could possibly go wrong?)
“Hello to the Robots that will replace people.”
One of my former employers made that point a few decades ago - creating and installing a robot mail delivery system. Don’t know what the payback period was, but the point was to show the union that nothing was too menial to be replaced by a robot. Little cart that is loaded with sorted mail, goes on a course through several buildings, stopping and sounding off so each office could have an employee can pick up their mail for local delivery. Very visible, daily reminder that even jobs with low wages could be replaced entirely - let alone finding ways to reduce the number of workers needed in more expensive jobs.
I guess the city government has somehow forgotten it’s L.A. Business owners can rent illegal Mexicans to do the work for far less.. and in today’s climate, who’s going to stop them?
—Too many Angelenos have been left behind even as weve put the recession in the rearview mirror,”—
Millions of Americans, including the Whites, have been left behind, not just ‘Angelenos’.
I wonder if Mayer Garcetti has a plan for the coming massive layoffs due to his empathy for the little guy.
