Polar bears now eat dolphins, thanks to global warming
CBS News ^ | June 15, 2015 | By ELIZABETH GOLDBAUM

Faced with a rapidly changing habitat, polar bears are adapting with a new entrée: For the first time, a polar bear was seen preying on a white-beaked dolphin carcass that had been trapped in the ice in Svalbard, a group of Norwegian islands in the Arctic Ocean.

In April 2014, a male polar bear with a full belly was spotted near a recently devoured white-beaked dolphin.

These dolphins rarely venture so far north in the Arctic; they prefer the sub-Arctic, which has less sea ice and more open water. "If it had been a more usual sea-ice year, I do not think the dolphins would have been that far north in the spring," said Jon Aass, primary author of the study and a research scientist at the Norwegian Polar Institute.

Re: AGW.

Shouldn't them bears be eating vegetarian now, with all them plants growing on the ice-denuded bits of land in the Arctic Circle-ish region?

In reality, the dolphins probably had been slow from feasting on the cornucopia of seafood delight up North, and the Polar bears were not only faster, but hungrier.

Someone should tell this loonie reporter to go there and stand on the ice for 10 min.
15min later we will see that Global Warming is causing Polar Bears to eat Reporters.

Is that really their headline?? It looks like satire. They forgot to mention that polar bears are also joining ISIS due to global warming.

This whole story is full of supposition. A picture of a polar bear eating a dolphin means just that and only that. It does not mean all these inferences:

o That polar bears have lost all of their native food and had to resort to a new one.

o That dolphins are not normally on a polar bear diet.

o That dolphins are not on the diet of any large predatory oceangoing critter.

o That a polar bear eating something other than normally witnessed means it is a trend.

o That the polar bear eating a dolphin is caused by anything specific that we know about

o That the science is more settled because we see that polar bears have a palate for variety in their diet.

o That dolphins or polar bears are somehow victims of mankind and not subject to laws of nature.

"First off - a lion, swimming in the ocean? Lions don't like water! If you'd placed it near a river or some other fresh water source, that would make sense. But you find youself in the ocean - twenty-foot wave? I'm assuming it's off the coast of South Africa - coming up against a full grown, 800-lb tuna, with his twenty or thirty friends? You'd lose that battle. You lose that battle nine times out of ten. And guess what?

You've wandered into a school of tuna, and we now have a taste of lion. We've talked to ourselves, we've communicated and said "You know what? Lion tastes good. Let's go get some more lion." And we've developed a system to establish a beachhead and aggressively hunt you and your family. We will corner your pride, your children, your offspring.

We will construct a series of breathing apparatus with kelp. We will be able to trap certain amounts of oxygen. It's not going to be days at a time, but an hour, hour forty-five? No problem. That will give us enough time to figure out where you live, go back to the sea, get more oxygen, and then stalk you.

You just lost at your own game. You are out-gunned, and out-manned."

If you get trapped on the ice they will eat you too. Its a polar bear thing. Not a global climate thing. :-)
