The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency unveiled its proposal for new fuel-economy standards that apply to big rigs and other heavy-duty trucks, marking another step in the Obama administration’s push for stricter climate regulations.
Based on a draft released Friday, the federal rules will require that tractors use 24% less fuel compared to projected 2018 levels. Heavy-duty pickup trucks and vans must achieve a 16% reduction.
The pending rules impact large diesel-powered vehicles like 18-wheelers, buses, garbage trucks and heavy-duty pickups. These commercial vehicles account for roughly 7% of all vehicles on U.S. roads but 25% of fuel consumption.
Friday’s draft sets Phase II of the EPA’s truck rules into motion. Phase I was completed in 2011, covering heavy-duty trucks from model years 2014 to 2018. Phase II will apply to trucks manufactured after that period.

Economics would have done this anyhow if it had made sense in terms of resources. Dollars are as good a medium as any to express the balance of what people think things are worth.
If it took $10,000 more of truck expenditure to save $20,000 of fuel, people would be willing to consider it. Just as curly bulbs were catching on, slowly, as people who actually found they saved money for certain applications preferred them.
When it becomes a case of we canna’ change the laws of physics, it becomes stupid.
I forgot, but the article did not, that the new rules will apply to tractors. There goes our food supply.

Trains will have to mothball older engines. Truckers will have to pay exorbitant modification prices to get their older trucks up to regulation or be fined up the ass.

I wonder why no one did this before? When I had that old truck that got about 4 miles a gallon if they would of written a law like this - think how much better gas mileage I would have gotten.

Someone needs to get Hillary or the next liberal candidate to agree that we should outlaw all auto racing and motor-sports, because it’s pointless and creates global warming.

Growth in the number of US trucks and buses running on natural gas —has been running about 30% annually for the last couple years.
Why would the new EPA regs not accelerate the uptake of the Pickens Plan. Pickens wants to shift over all trucks and buses to natural gas.
