Obama Administration to Impose New MPG Rules on Large Trucks

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency unveiled its proposal for new fuel-economy standards that apply to big rigs and other heavy-duty trucks, marking another step in the Obama administration’s push for stricter climate regulations.

Based on a draft released Friday, the federal rules will require that tractors use 24% less fuel compared to projected 2018 levels. Heavy-duty pickup trucks and vans must achieve a 16% reduction.

The pending rules impact large diesel-powered vehicles like 18-wheelers, buses, garbage trucks and heavy-duty pickups. These commercial vehicles account for roughly 7% of all vehicles on U.S. roads but 25% of fuel consumption.

Friday’s draft sets Phase II of the EPA’s truck rules into motion. Phase I was completed in 2011, covering heavy-duty trucks from model years 2014 to 2018. Phase II will apply to trucks manufactured after that period.

Good to hear. I hadn’t realized that.

I agree with your take on it.

Just as curly bulbs were catching on...”

Not in our house and I have one garage wall full of enough of the old fashioned kind to last me until the day I die or 15 more years, whichever comes first.

It’s not so much the change as it is that we are given absolutely no choice. When some government agency decides what we are going to spend our money on and eliminate all choices except for theirs, they have gone too far. In the case of the light bulbs, there should be an ample supply of all kinds so those that want those squirrley curly bulbs can buy them but I can buy the kind I prefer.

Now King Barack is an automotive engineer.

You forget, he was always an automotive engineer.

Remember when he instructed us to make sure our tires were properly inflated?

The wise and powerful 0B has spoken!

If this was about saving money, making America more energy independent, helping the economy, etc....

If this were about any of that Obama's EPA wouldn't want anything to do with it.

What will happen is loads will be limited so trucks will make twice as many trips.

“The “Trojan Horse” POTUS marches on.”

I disagree. His ‘roots’ were there for all to see. Just many chose not to see.

It also hurts the person working by the hour or working as a plumber, brick mason, lawn care, etc..

These workers need a decent medium sized pickup sturdy enough to haul brick, cinder blocks, sand, etc.

Some by new but many buy used.

What do you think the maintenance costs will be like on these trucks when they are 5 to 10 years old?

Computers, sensors, EPA crap.....all of that will be costly to maintain.

RE: 8

I’ve been shop foreman for a local trucking company for over 30 years.
Almost half of my maintenance costs now are emissions related.

Started to get bad when the EGR systems were introduced into big-time diesel engines.

We cuss the EPA daily.....

No wonder I still see many trucks like the 1955/60 Peterbuilts (the same semi used in the movie “Duel”) still in use. BTW, in the neighborhood I grew up in, I had one neighbor driving a 1953 Chevy truck for as long as I lived there an \d he still has it to this very day and I’ll turn 49 next month.

At least my former neighbor with the 1953 Chevy truck need not worry about all the EPA stuff you mentioned. If I had need for a truck, I have the ultimate protest idea, if you can find one, buy something like a 1928/29 Ford Model AA pickup (like "The Waltons") and use that. Come to think of it, I saw a picture of one in South America that is still used to this very day.

Problem is, that some rules require retrofit.

Calif, for example. Trucks, farm tractors, generators, fire trucks (excuse me while I puke ... ) etc.

He has his Law (NOPE... REGULATIONS) ... now let him Enforce them.

LE may be getting sick and tired of being a whipping boy for Obama and his agencies.

Dear LE here is a clue ... Enforce Laws, Ignore Regulations and maybe a more harmonious outcome may be achieved.

TT

It's as likely as his having been a 'constitutional law' professor.
