The backlash against public use of Confederate flags has built quickly since nine parishioners were gunned down inside a South Carolina church last week.
Alabama removed the flag from its state capitol grounds Wednesday, and political leaders in Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee and North Carolina have moved to remove Confederate flag symbols from their state license plates. Wal-Mart, Amazon, Sears and eBay all have said they will stop selling the Confederate battle flag, viewed by many people as a symbol of racism and slavery.
But what about the other symbols of the Confederacy that live on in our everyday lives? What, for example, about the dozens of elementary, middle and high schools that bear the names of prominent Confederate leaders?
There are at least 188 such public and public charter schools nationwide, according to an analysis of federal data published by the Web site Vocativ. Many, but not all, are in the South.
And already, there are calls to rename some of them.
California Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez (D-San Diego), sent a letter to the San Diego Unified School District calling on officials to rename an elementary school that honors Confederate General Robert E. Lee.
The flag in particular, and anyone associated with this army, in general, have been associated with intolerance, racism and hate, none of which have a place in our schools, Gonzalez wrote, according to San Diegos Fox 5 TV.
Gonzalez wrote that the elementary school is located in a vibrant, multiethnic community with a strong African-American presence that deserves a school named after someone we can all admire. ... Robert E. Lee is not that person.
Its not yet clear whether the push to remove symbols of the Confederacy will extend to school names, which can hold powerful sway with nostalgic alumni.

good post. thanks
This is feeding racism, both black and white.
Dallas, Tx has Thomas Jefferson HS in their district. Oh great not only will we have to fight for our Alamo, we must fight for our Dallas schools as well!!
NO
I wrote to John Hoeven shortly after he became Governor of North Dakota. I pointed out to him that the abortion decisions of the USSC are all “immoral commands,” i.e., the Catholic Church teaches that they cannot be obeyed. As did the Nuremberg tribunal.
That being the case, I said, it was his duty as Governor to disobey the Supreme Court—which would mean enforcing North Dakota’s abortion laws, which are still on the books.
He never answered me, but he talked to a friend of mine. He found everything I said incomprehensible.
The American bishops have NEVER issued a statement in which they specified the moral obligations of various government officials regarding abortion. I.e., the duties of legislators, the duties of governors, the duties of the police.
The reason for this, of course, is that a significant number of bishops are pro-abortion. Bernardin, Wuerl, all the “Peace Bishops” of the 1980’s, all the bishops (the vast majority) who teach that abortion is not a sin by giving Communion to abortionists like Joe Biden and Nancy Pelosi.
An excellent opportunity.
Close ALL of them and sell the buildings. Then start closing ALL government schools.
Since half of property taxes go to finance government schools, cut all property taxes in half. That will free up TWICE AS MUCH money as will be needed for people to educate their own children.
He’s freed here then goes back to Africa and starts slave trading. Spielberg didn’t include that part about Cinque in his movie.
I’m guessing it’s not a school I’d be willing to fight for.
You’ be guessing correctly. This is absolutely insane. But what we should expect from an insane creature squatting in our oo? It seems to ALWAYS choose the incorrect side of a disagreement.
I am wondering when we see this episode in propaganda backfire and send these liberal nuts back down into their crap holes.
I find it interesting that Mr. Roof’s dream of sparking a race war is being fulfilled by the race baiters, politicians and media. (The last 2 are kind of redundant)
From the third world posing as an American, no less.
Your comment re. African tourism is spot on. I lived in Ghana in 1975, while working as an airline pilot for a French/Ghanian company.
I later worked for the American charter carrier Transamerica in 1976-1978. After Alex Haley’s “Roots” series, the company was drooling over how successful their NYC to Accra “Back to Africa” flights were going to be. Yeah, right.
The American blacks would hop off the airplane, point to their skin color, and announce they were “home”. The Ghanian answer: “Yes, you are American. We LOVE Americans! Welcome, welcome!” - and completely ignore the fact that they were black (-: When the word got back home, reservations dropped to near zero. Within a short time, the flights ended.
There are more schools that are named after communists such as rosa parks, and mlk.
Give them time, they will get to it.
The insanity continues. The real targets are the 1st/2nd/10th Amendments and a continuance of Leftist Mob Rule over the Constitution. We need to stay focused that the Confederate Flag and Confederate leaders are not the true targets, but only a useful lever for the Left to use to advance its agenda.
Lee advocated for the free education of blacks after the Civil War. His family operated an “illegal” school for blacks at their Arlington plantation before 1861.
No. HELL no.
It's time for the black race bigots to shut the hell up and do something worthwhile with their lives.
