U.S. Flag Waves Over 10 Army Bases Proudly Named for Confederate Officers

Puts S.C.’s Confederate-flag flap in perspective.

It’s tough to top the historical amnesia that has let the Confederate flag fly over the South Carolina capitol for more than half a century. But the U.S. Army certainly can give Columbia’s banner a run for its money: it operates posts named for nine Confederate generals and a colonel, including the head of its army, the reputed Georgia chief of the Ku Klux Klan and the commander whose troops fired the first shots of the Civil War.

It shouldn’t be surprising. Both the Army and the South are tradition-bound entities that revere their past. Each of the posts was named for a Confederate officer long after the Civil War, including many in the first half of the 20th Century when the U.S. military was rushing to open training posts for both world wars. Army Colonel Steve Warren, a Pentagon spokesman, said Wednesday there is “no discussion” underway about renaming the posts.

The Army itself stood firm. “Every Army installation is named for a soldier who holds a place in our military history,” Brigadier General Malcolm Frost, the service’s top spokesman, said Wednesday. “Accordingly, these historic names represent individuals, not causes or ideologies. It should be noted that the naming occurred in the spirit of reconciliation, not division.”(continued)

If the media pull this off, in time and in thoughtful retrospect, the media will finally be DONE!

This whole notion of getting rid of this flag is totally misplaced. If we are going to do something with substance, we should ban the political Party that upheld slavery without apology.

It is the Democrat Party that has this heritage of hate. No Republican EVER held slaves - ONLY DEMOCRATS. The Democrat Party has NEVER apologized for slavery! If we are going to ban anything meaningful because of slavery - BAN THE DEMOCRAT PARTY !!!

There is a fundamental difference in the relationship between a metropole and its colonies and the relationship between a federal government and its component subdivisions.

There is nothing legal about attacking a United States Army garrison.

They took up arms against the army of a foreign government occupying state owned land.

April 12, 1861 A glorious day in history when someone finally stood up to an over reaching government. There will come a day when all freedom loving people will wish the South had won. And that day is fast approaching.

In fact, look for some gay marriages to be performed on the hallowed grounds of Confederate soldiers’ graves with Governor Nicki Haley officiating.

Component subdivisions? Are you serious? I agree that a federal government that you joined voluntarily at the government’s request under the impression that you could leave anytime you wanted IS a lot different than what Washington and the guys did against King George. That land belonged to England.

That land in 1861 belonged to South Carolina.

It seems the only way to get FedGov™s undivided attention is to lob heavy artillery shells into one of their forts.

Ain't happening, but they want to put it out there so it's negotiable. Which it isn't.

That said, I had a similar conversation with a Southern friend a couple of years ago and about three beers in he said, "You can rename Fort Bragg to Fort [blankyblank] Sherman and I wouldn't say a word!" After I got up off the floor I discovered he has a certain familial...distaste...for Braxton Bragg...

That depends on if it’s located in the territory of a foreign country that has asked the fort be vacated.
