A gun control group claims 12,558 people were shot and killed in 2014, but since guns are used to stop an estimated 2.5 million crimes a year, that means guns are used 199 times more often to prevent crime than to kill, as journalist Kit Daniels explains.
Anybody know if the way this Kit Daniels is analyzing the stats, is accurate? (I mean, I know his simple math with the ratio was accurate, but is he comparing the right things?)
Interesting if true.
Just in the excerpt, I’m seeing some funny use of stats. Comparing “people shot and killed” with “crimes stopped” implies that the two sets don’t overlap. However, if someone walked into my house tonight intending to rob, rape, and/or kill, and Anoreth shot and killed him, we have an incident in both categories.
Also, a significant number of shot-and-killed incidents are suicides, which don’t fit into a crime/prevention framework at all.
A 1993 nationwide survey of 4,977 households found that over the previous five years, at least 3.5% of households had members who had used a gun "for self-protection or for the protection of property at home, work, or elsewhere."
Applied to the U.S. population, this amounts to 1,029,615 such incidents per year.
This figure excludes all "military service, police work, or work as a security guard."[19]
* A 1994 survey conducted by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that Americans use guns to frighten away intruders who are breaking into their homes about 498,000 times per year.[20]
* A 1982 survey of male felons in 11 state prisons dispersed across the U.S. found:[21]
34% had been "scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim"
40% had decided not to commit a crime because they "knew or believed that the victim was carrying a gun"
69% personally knew other criminals who had been "scared off, shot at, wounded, or captured by an armed victim"[22]
UNLESS you take guns from the decent people THEN... few crimes are spoiled..
LAck of guns INCREASES CRIME...
2.5 MILLION a year? That works out to one a heck of a lot just per day also!
2.5 million/300 million x 365 days = 0.002% occur rate
It’s impossible to guess how many crimes never even start because the perp fears the potential victim “might” have a gun. It’s the possibility of a gun that stops them. Not necessarily the display of one.
As we approached within ten meters or so of the thugs, I reached inside my suit jacket and unsnapped my Bianchi shoulder holster -- and kept my hand in there, on the grip of my HK P7. As soon as they saw where I had my hand -- and heard the distinct "click" of the retention snap, the thugs scattered like a flock of spooked birds.
Because I had lagged back a couple of steps behind my colleagues, they couldn't figure out what had ended the encounter so dramatically. It was only when I opened my jacket to ensure that the P7 was fully secured that they became aware that I had been armed all day. Obviously, had I not "made my move", the thugs would have never suspected that one of us was armed...
My weapon was never exposed to the thugs; but the mere appearance that I might be armed ended the confrontation.
Events like that are never reported, but, IMO, they are far more frequent than self-defense shootings or, even, instances where display of a weapon ends confrontation (which, likewise, is seldom reported).
But, if I had been forced to use my weapon, the "anti-Gun Violence" pukes would have counted that righteous self-defense shoot as "Gun Violence". My response to those stupid liberals would have been:
"Not all 'Gun Violence' is bad. Some folks just need shooting!"

P.S. For most of my "20-year 'exile' in MA, I had a MA CHL with the notation, "For all lawful purposes...". And, thankfully, during over 35 years of being armed every time I leave my home, I have never even had to point my weapon at anyone -- much less shoot them.
And, that is what I pray for -- every time I "strap it on"...
Good insight, good story.
Very significant figures there. Thanks for the stats.
Good job!
Thanks Mrs. Don-o.
However, the latter is now emerging into view after many, many years of dormancy.
