Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. announced a proposal last week to remove the statue and grave sites of Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest and his wife.

“These relics, these messages of this despicable period of this great nation, it’s time for those to be moved,” the Democratic mayor, who is black, said in a news conference, a local NBC affiliate reported.

Mr. Wharton told The Associated Press that he wants the statue removed from Health Sciences Park and “returned to Forrest Monument Association that had it placed there.” He said the graves of the noted KKK leader and his wife, which are in the park, should be relocated to Elmwood Cemetery.

“I despise whatever the Confederacy stood for,” Mr. Wharton said. “This is not just an ordinary monument. This is a monument to a man who was the avowed founder of the organization that has as its purpose the intimidation, the oppression of black folks.”

Councilman Myron Lowery said he is in discussion with Council Attorney Allan Wade to draw up an ordinance to move the proposal along, NBC reported.

Councilman Harold Collins and Councilman Jim Strickland are running for Memphis mayor against Mr. Wharton, but reportedly support the mayor’s proposal.

The Sons of Confederate Veterans said Forrest was a “revered member of society in Memphis” and argued that racists like the alleged Charleston church shooter are misusing the Confederate flag, NBC reported.

“He was just a nut case basically and a white supremacist,” representative Lee Millar said of the alleged gunman. “That certainly is not what the Sons of Confederate Veterans is about.”

Nathan Bedford Forrest is one of the best military minds in this country's history.

This is all about bowing to PC.

Since there are no slaveowners today, the PC police are trying to take down those already dead.

They will not stop until they topple George Washington's monument in DC.

They should at least give his corpse a trial first.

If they succeed in wiping out all public vestiges of CWI, they’re going to move on to wiping out all public vestiges of American history, except those pertaining to slavery.

Think these bastards would show as much outrage over the subhuman savages who will kill us as soon as they get the chance?

Mayor A.C. Wharton is hiding something. When the Memphis people belonging to the race of professional victims begin to wave the bloody flag and show they are being offended, start holding on to your wallet. The Mayor and his councilmen are into something to help deflect their incompetence or are robbing the public of money. This is the MO of the NAACP members and this bunch. I highly recommend someone take close look at their finances because there is some illegal money activity going on somewhere. I’d bet the farm on it.

Jefferson was a slave owner. What next? Burn down Monticello? Kick him off the nickel? Shred the Declaration of Independence?
Destroy all the swivel office chairs that he invented?

The possibilities are limitless.

This is also a monument to a man who turned on the KKK as its purpose twisted into hate, going so far as to testify against it in Congress after he ordered it to disband.

This is a man who, in his last public appearance, was honored by Blacks for his work on reconciliation.

I’ve noticed more recent biographies seem to change what I was taught about the man in New York schools in the 1960s.

The original purpose of the KKK had little to do with blacks but more to do with the Northern Carpet Baggers that came south after the War.

At some point the KKK then morphed into something else.

Memphis is mostly a crime infested pit. So, naturally the most important issue there is the Civil War.

How about “Sheets” Byrds’ grave???

Wherever it is, shouldn’t they exhume him and toss him into the middle of the Atlantic too???

Consistancy, folks!

Some years ago I heard a talk by a 97-year-old man who was the son of someone who had ridden with Forrest. I forget how many years ago it was but very likely the man who gave the talk has passed on.

None of my great-grandfathers served in the war. Two had the excuse of age (born in 1850 and 1864). The other two were old enough (born in 1835 and 1844) but evaded service by failing to immigrate.

Let’s see now, I’ll bet there will be a lot of renaming of streets from say, Forrest Lane to MLK Jr. Lane, or Rev. Jesse Jackson Lane. to kiss the butts of the, er, lilly livered libs.

In a more civilized age, the idea of digging up someone's bones and casting them out of a cemetery would have been considered an outrage. Apparently it is now acceptable if the person in question is not politically correct. But what did Forrest's wife do to deserve such treatment?

They don't need to destroy the monuments in Washington, which do pull in tourists and their dollars. They can just rename them--the Washington Monument can become the Martin Luther King Monument, or perhaps the John Brown Monument, and the Jefferson Memorial can be renamed the Sally Hemings Memorial. Maybe add a statue of Sally sitting on Tom's lap (to keep it G-rated) but of course she can only be three-fifths the size of Jefferson because she was only three-fifths of a person.

My GGF who served with NBF was born in 1839 in Germany and immigrated to Louisiana in the early 1850s.
