No doubt this happened; Staten Island isn’t what it used to be.
I would have attempted to defend myself using potentially lethal force. That’s not bluster. I’ve done it.
Now, I never had to kill anyone. Maybe inverted an elbow, made someone p### themselves, broken a hand, and drew a bit of blood. That kind of thing. Also talked myself and on occasion someone I was with out of some potentially nasty spots despite being quite capable of using force instead.
But those were all one-on-one or one-on-two (me being the one) confrontations.
One vs. seven leaves you a lot less options for restraint...
