Pope calls unfettered capitalism 'the dung of the devil'
Telegraph ^ | 7/10/2015 | Agencies

Pope Francis on Thursday launched a blistering attack on the "new colonialism" of austerity, describing unfettered capitalism as “the dung of the devil” and apologising for the Catholic church's role in the conquest of indigenous populations in the Americas.

He delivered a powerful mea culpa on the part of the church in the highlight of his South American pilgrimage, "humbly" begging forgiveness during an encounter in Bolivia with indigenous groups and other activists and in the presence of Bolivia's first-ever indigenous president, Evo Morales.

The first Latin American pope noted that church leaders in the past had acknowledged that "grave sins were committed against the native peoples of America in the name of God." St. John Paul II, for his part, apologized to the continent's indigenous for the "pain and suffering" caused during the 500 years of the church's presence in the Americas during a 1992 visit to the Dominican Republic.

But the Pope went further and said he was doing so with "regret."

"I would also say, and here I wish to be quite clear, as was St. John Paul II: I humbly ask forgiveness, not only for the offenses of the church herself, but also for crimes committed against the native peoples during the so-called conquest of America," he said to applause from the crowd.

Then deviating from his prepared script, he added: "I also want for us to remember the thousands and thousands of priests who strongly opposed the logic of the sword with the power of the cross. There was sin, and it was plentiful. But we never apologized, so I now ask for forgiveness. But where there was sin, and there was plenty of sin, there was also an abundant grace increased by the men who defended indigenous peoples."

I’m Catholic and this Pope is totally off the Rez.

It’s on the whole capitalism thing he’s against. Has nothing to do with slave labor wages paid in those countries who are dominantly non-catholic.

We have to remember that this is the Pope speaking, not the Church. He will have no effect on the Magisterium. For a time he invigorates the leftist bishops who exist in Europe and America but this, too, shall pass. There is a reason for this man. We can’t see it yet but it is there. There have been bad Popes before. This one’s difference is that he tries to affect the tenets of the Church. Previous bad apples were only interested in personal aggrandizement and political power for themselves. They paid no attention to the Ground of the Church. I won’t go running off to another church because there is no other Church. My beliefs just don’t change because we get a flake at the top.

The parallels between Obama and this Pope are uncanny - Obama did his apology tours, now the Pope is doing his.

How far we’ve sunk since the days of Reagan and Pope John Paul!

Sounds like railing at a straw man. Like the Grinch who hated Christmas altogether, on account of the gaudy toys.

And that means the entire Church itself is an enemy of the United States as it was founded. In the same way Islam is an enemy in its hatred of our freedom of conscience, Catholicism has put itself in the position as an enemy of our liberty of opportunity. Just as Moslem Americans have the obligation to denounce and fight against the barbarities committed in their name, American Catholics have the same obligation to denounce this pope in no uncertain terms as an enemy of the traditional American way of life. If not, they deserve to be looked at with suspicion.

When the whole place seems to be becoming about men rather than about God — well then if you want “true Church” you will be looking for congregations that really do make it about God.

He seems to be proudly ignorant of that, and all he knows or cares about is the little piece of South America that he knew.

I was worried-and had a bad feeling- when I heard ‘Jesuit’. Now I’m sickened. A socialist Marxist Pope living in splendor, surrounded by homosexuals and pedophiles, says capitalism is evil. This is ominous.

The point is that there are certain standards of honesty (one of which is the honesty towards God of not enslaving what He does not will to enslave). BUT THAT’S IT... you don’t try to legislate business into being bleeding hearts.

“That this comes from ignorance, and not malice . . .”

In the age of information, ignorance requires malice.

‘A socialist Marxist Pope living in splendor, surrounded by homosexuals and pedophiles, says capitalism is evil.’

Could be statement of truth for the day.

Well I don’t know if it’s true but I’ve seen a report that this fellow boasts he does not read any news.

What a ghastly attitude to take. He’s acting as chief pastor to a congregation with worldwide branches and he doesn’t want to try to get an accurate picture of what’s happening in all those places. Sure there is a grain of truth here, a sole news diet of the MSM could get anyone off in left field, but there are also ways of verifying information today too.

I don’t go to a church because it is socially compatible with me or because I like the preacher. I am a convert and studied history and religion much in the converting. I was and am convinced that there is one Church from the beginning and its history with occasional bad actors does tempt me to jump to a heresy.
